To Reach Latinos, GOP Must Alter Its Message, Tone
Real Clear Politics ^ | August 22, 104 | Maria T. Cardona

There is no doubt that the Latino electorate is becoming increasingly important in presidential elections and will become even more so in the future. Today, one in six Americans are of Latino descent. By 2050, that number will be one in three.

.........................................................

At a time when one-fourth of all kindergarten age children in the country are Latino, and when the majority of births are children of color, the Republican Party had better find a way to embrace policies that do not demonize the government that is currently seen as a partner of the communities they need to reach.

Well, there you go. Republicans should be taking advice from Democrats.

Tell the truth, big government is a disaster. You should know that because that is what you are fleeing. If you disagree stay where you are.

Democrats: “You Republicans better not say anything about the flood of third worlders streaming into your country; otherwise, you are racists!”

Later...

“Now that there are so many third worlders here, you Republicans better pander to them!”

As mentioned in related threads concerning GOP support by certain groups, please consider the following.

Probably the only reason that voters have any interest in the federal government in the first place is the following. Voters are likely not being taught about the federal government’s constitutionally limited powers.

in fact, one of the very few powers that the Founding States delegated to Congress, expressly via the Constitution, that might affect voters on an almost daily basis is the US Mail Service, such power evidenced by the Constitution’s Clause 7 of Section 8 of Article I. And do we really need a two-party political system to decide policy for the US Mail Service?

Otherwise, the states have never delegated to Congress the specific power to regulate, tax and spend for most of the post-FDR era federal services that many voters are now dependent on.

“Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States.” —Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

Also, note that the states have never amended the Constitution to prohibit themselves from requiring candidate voters to pass a basic constitutional law test before being allowed to vote, such a test emphasizing the federal government’s constitutionally limited powers, including limits on Congress’s power to lay taxes.

Note that a constitutional law proficiency test for candidate voters can easily be under ten multiple choice questions, the test included as part of a written driver’s test.

Screw that noise. The GOP is already democrat-lite. No thanks. Defend the constitution or die!!

Exactly! Constitutional conservatism works for everybody, regardless of skin color. I'm a Reagan Hispanic American. Under Reagan, Hispanics did very well, they, like anyone of skin color, had many opportunities to succeed during that era. Limited government leads to opportunities for its citizens while big government dependence does not and just leads to enslavement by the government. I will always vote the Constitution and limited government which leads to opportunities for all.

imho in addition to punitive taxes on remittances, strong borders and aggressive deportations the pubbies need to be in favor doing the R&D that makes desalinization cheap enough for desert farming —so cheap that the deserts of the USA AND Mexico will be turned green. So cheap all the world’s deserts could be turned green. So cheap the size of the habitable earth is doubled.

This is the vision thing. Like Star wars. Unlike star wars which was never actually completed. The R&D can be finished in 10 years. It will happen anyway in 20 years without concerted public policy as desalination prices fall by 50% every decade.

The cheapest desalination is currently done by the Israelis and Singapore for costs in the $550@ acre foot range. High end cash crops are competitive at $200@ acre foot. Field crops are competitive for under $100@ acre foot.

The important thing is that the Pubbies own this idea. Energy independence byo fracking is nearly already a done deal. It will happen with or without pubbie support by 2020. Its on the way to happening now despite the best efforts of the Obama administration to kill it.

Here’s a drought map of the USA.

This is W Bush taking the ice bucket challenge. He lives in midland in west texas. Check the map above. He’s also in an area of the severest drought in the USA.

Here is elon musk taking the ice bucket challenge. He lives in coastal California. Again check the map above. He also lives in an area of the severest drought in the USA.

Why is a new water policy so important for border policy. While cheap water would increase the size of the USA by 1/3—cheap desalinized water would triple the habitable size of Mexico and go a long way toward making that country very prosperous. Prosperous people don’t need go anywhere. Nor will they be too happy about people crossing their borders if they have something to defend.

For that matter, taxes on remittances could be used to fund the R&D for water desalination.

Thank you. No more pandering to this group...or that group.

I am 50% Mexican descent. Hell, I even grew up in El Paso, TX...(border town).

I have never considered myself anything other than American. I have never voted with my heritage in mind. I always voted with the mindset of “what is best for the nation”.

I grew up speaking English in my house. No multicultural BS.

I am also 50% Scottish. Does the GOP need to pander to that half of me as well?

I am so sick and tired of this separatist baloney.
Republicans need to follow the law, re-read the Constitution, and do what is right by their oath and for our Nation.

Those are great ideas. Now you just need to find some politicians whose primary purpose is NOT to destroy the USA and its citizens.

Re: “If GOP wants to win, they need to be against illegal immigration.”

I disagree.

We need to be against LEGAL immigration first.

In 2013, we handed out 1.1 million new Green Cards.

In 2013, we created 750,000 new citizens, and 80% of them will eventually vote for the Democrat Party.

Almost all Republicans want to stop illegal immigration.

But only a few want to stop LEGAL immigration, and that will be the source of our political destruction.

Clearly, this isn’t addressed to the ones who legally vote. Their support for border enforcement is pretty much in line with everybody but the communists.
The free lunch crowd will be for open borders until there aren’t enough goodies to go around. We may not have to wait long.
