Videos are available at the URL. Sam Dotson, chief of the police of the St. Louis metropolitan police, responded to a question as to why police did not use Tasers or shoot Powell to wound rather than to kill. He said that they might not have been able to because of his sweater. In the video, though, the sweatshirt appears to be open. Unanswered was why the police did not shoot him in the legs rather than kill.

Egad, police do not shoot to wound, they never have that is a Hollywood created line of BS. They shoot center mass (or try too).

One talking head on CNN (a former police officer) said that police usually either don’t shoot or they shoot for the body in these situations.

More either/or thinking?

Nothing in between?

“Unanswered was why the police did not shoot him in the legs rather than kill.”

Nobody aims for the legs... you’ve been around here long enough to know that.

Ignorance is dispelled by knowledge.

They don’t shoot to wound even when they are more than capable of doing so? That seems to be extreme either/or thinking, and limits them to thinking merely on an emotional level in the heat of the moment. Not good.

What about bean bag rounds fired from a shotgun? Could that have been an option here?

Capable? Most police are not that accurate on the range much less the field. Even the ones that are can miss in a highly charged situation. You can train all day for a high stress shooting but until you are in one you have no idea how you will react or be able to control your weapon. They are taught from day one to shoot center mass since that is the largest target and has a better chance of stopping the threat. Head shots are a fool’s errand with a pistol at more than 3-5 feet in a high stress situation. Shooting at legs, arms, hands, feet not only runs the risk of a miss, but also ricochets and the miss that travels down range.

Center mass or nothing.

If the adversary is wearing body armour or is partially covered, center of mass may not be effective.

Jus' sayin' ...

In general, first shots go to CoM.

Also, shooting hips or thighs is almost as likely to kill the adversary as shooting CoM. A ruptured femoral artery is often fatal.

The answers ta the link provide a measure of knowledge, but are knowledge that is limited to mere either/or thinking, reduces a situation to merely an emotional level, and is not good in the heat of the moment when cooler heads need to prevail, especially if the man has a mental disorder.

The link: all force is lethal. n

No it is not. Some force is more “lethal” than other uses of force, and the use of the word “lethal” there is a logically fallacious sweeping generalization when it comes to the use of the word “lethal.” Aiming for the legs is not “lethal use of force” when compared to center mass.

“Very unlikely to hit arms or legs.”

Officer Darren Wilson had no problem doing this. At least four shots to the arm.

These guys this close could (with 12 shots fired) easily have hit him in the legs multiple times, taking him down with legs totally incapacitated.

The rest of the link does not provide knowledge at all, either. Just more logical fallacies... Yawn...

This close they should have.

Some situations, no, they shouldn’t.
