On Thursday, when a Malaysian Airlines plane was apparently shot down over Ukraine, a Ukrainian Buk anti-aircraft missile battery was operational in the region, the Russian Defense Ministry said, contradicting Kievs statements.
The battery was deployed at a site from which it could have fired a missile at the airliner, the ministry said in a statement. It said radiation from the batterys radar was detected by the Russian military.
The Russian equipment detected throughout July 17 the activity of a Kupol radar, deployed as part of a Buk-M1 battery near Styla [a village some 30km south of Donetsk], the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said the radar could be providing tracking information to another battery deployed in the region, which was at a firing distance from the planes flight path.
Earlier Kiev said it could not have fired a missile at the passing civilian plane because it had no Buk missile launchers deployed in the region. At the same time the Ukrainians said the militias had no Buk systems in their hands, according to a statement from the countrys Prosecutor General.
After the Russian ministry came out with the statement, Bogdan Senyk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reiterated Kievs position, saying that "anti-aircraft missiles have not been deployed during the anti-terrorist operation ... they are all in place."

Must have been an old SA-11 system. The replacements (SA-17s) are more advanced radar systems.
Hey,Vlad...we were born at night but it wasn’t *last* night.
RT throwing a bone to the Paultards.
It sure would be interesting to know what American surveillance assets saw at that time.
Unfortunately, I can trust neither Putin nor 0bama.
LOL, so true.
Lies and more lies.
Furthermore, Ukrainian army has a prior record of knocking down civilian planes (2001 with about 60 Israelis), the resistance capabilities are questionable.
Putin is responsible for these deaths.
What we know for certain is that shooting down a civilian airliner is not a rational act for either side, except as a false-flag operation to blame the other.
Thus, whoever’s launcher fired the missile, it was either an error or a false-flag operation.
Russia is itching to get a casus belli to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Yup, the loons are eating this up on ZeroHedge. Nevermind another RT reporter resigned in protest this morning after explaining that RT was nothing but Russian propaganda and the official policy on all things is "blame Ukraine".
From Russia Today??? Please don’t insult our intelligence:
Is this the smoking gun? Footage emerges of BUK missile launcher being smuggled back to Russia and missing TWO rockets

Cui Bono?
Russia Today. ‘Nuff said. They had ANOTHER journalist resign today because they wanted them to lie and blame all of this on the Ukraine.
Supposedly, our satellites picked up the bloom from the launch with IR sensors. It should be easy to determine the location of the launch and know who had control of the area. The only question after that is do you believe anything from this admin?
A specific assertion that should be investigated by OSCE without interference from either side.
How can it be Putin's fault? That area was forbidden to all civil air traffic. Its a war zone. That plane was not suppose to be there.
And it wasn't Putin that violently overthrew the democratically elected government of Ukraine and ignited a civil war. That dishonor goes to George Soros and his meat-puppet Barry Soetoro.
George Soros Giant Globalist Footprint in Ukraines Turmoil
The same men behind the overthrow of Libya, Syria, and trying to wreck our country RIGHT NOW with a massive illegal alien invasion.
Would that be before or after Putin turns over the black boxes
and before or after the Russian BUK launcher heading back to Russia with TWO missiles missing is destroyed???
False.
