Quinn, Kelly seek tighter gun laws after July 4 weekend violence (Chicago)

Days after Chicago marked a violent Fourth of July weekend, Gov. Pat Quinn and U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly reiterated their support for tighter gun laws.

“I’ve seen firsthand the devastation caused by this violence,” Quinn said at a news conference Sunday, a block from where Tonya Gunn, 44, was shot to death last week in the Morgan Park neighborhood.

The latest push comes on the heels of an especially bloody weekend, in which 13 people were killed and at least 58 wounded in shootings across the city.

Quinn and Kelly urged the passage of a bill in the Illinois General Assembly — the Illinois Public Safety Act — that would ban assault weapons; put a limit on high-capacity ammunition; and expand background checks for prospective gun buyers.

“Who has to die and how many have to die until we do something about it?” Kelly said.

Mentally ill.

This is the mode of liberalism.

The “solution” to the VA problem will be a bigger VA.

The “solution” to the failure of Obamacare will be more Obamacare.

The “solution” to increased debt will be to incur more debt.

Is there even one of all those Chicago murders committed by someone with a legally registered gun?

I wonder if they’ve considered passing a law that prohibits shooting people.

How about longer sentences without parole for violent repeat offenders?

Oh, wait, that’s racist.

How many "assault weapons" are used in Chicago homicides? I'll guess that absolutely none were used over July 4th -- which would be exactly the same as the effect of passing this law. None.

(At the cost of repeating myself -- Al Capone's Chicago was much safer than Rahm Emmanuel's Chicago -- and you could buy a Thompson submachine gun for $225 by mail in Al Capone's Chicago. It should be obvious. It's not the guns.)

“reiterated their support for tighter gun laws.”

Just how stupid and “brain dead” are these people? Don’t they realize that these killers don’t care about LAWS?
That’s why they are stabbing and shooting.

There used to be a day in America where laws were written and OBEYED by the populace. Now, it’s almost impossible to convict anyone (other than a law abiding, tax paying citizen) for anything.

How many times have you been in a store and heard some woman screaming at her spoiled child saying “I told you if you did that again I was going to spank you!” Then the child simply did whatever it was again! No follow through on the punishment, just a lot of hot air.

Criminals today are coddled and worse yet protected by Political Correctness and racial special privileges.

Forget about new and more laws.......enforce the ones that have been with us for over 100 years.

Maybe its time to give everyone in Chicago a gun and let them sort it out. A city with the toughest gun laws in the nation and it still does not work. Perhaps its time to go back to the drawing board.

With the current administration there, Chicago will soon look like Detroit and they won’t understand why.

With the exception that Detroit has learned their lessons about gun control.

They must have got word that there are still a few legal guns out there they haven’t been able to confiscate.

If laws worked we wouldn't have a pot-head illegal alien sitting in the White House as president.

Depends on your definition of the word "soon". Parts of Chicago are as safe as any city, anywhere, other parts are more dangerous than Zimbabwe. As long as Chicago has "cash cows" including O'Hare and the business district, I don't think it will become Detroit. (Or not exactly Detroit.)

"As part of David Bernstein and Noah Isackson’s excellent piece on politicians and gangs in Chicago, we included a map of Chicago gang territory based on CPD information. Out of curiosity, I plotted 2011’s homicides (through 12/11) and overlaid them on the gang-territory map. It’s approximate, but it’s a useful rough sketch of the overlap."

Why don't they push for a law requiring everyone to start a vegetable garden? That would have about the same chance of impacting gun violence as what they are planning on pushing for. Actually maybe better, people busy gardening might not have time to shoot other people.

Seriously, these people are either idiots -certifiable idiots- or they are merely taking advantage of this terrible situation to advance their agenda. The steps and laws they are proposing will not work. That isn't opinion, that is provable fact. These kinds of laws have not been effective anywhere else they have been tried, while getting rid of similar laws has been effective.
