Search the Scriptures; Christ rules over the nations, plural. The following are a few examples of many in Scripture which teach that nations are to bow the knee to Christ.
Psalm 9:17 “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.”
Psalm 22:8 “For the kingdom is the Lord’s: and he is the governor among the nations.”
Psalm 67:4 “4 O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah.”
Psalm 72:11 “Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.”
A civil government is either for or against Jesus Christ, because Christ commands obedience; he does not merely suggest obedience or offer it as a “good idea”.
John 15:10
“If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.”
Note that this starts with the word “if”. Abiding in Christ’s love is conditional upon our keeping his commandments.
If there is no explicit recognition by a national government of Christ as Lord and the Bible as the foundation of its legal system, then that national government is not explicitly Christian. Such a government would base its laws and actions not upon the Bible, but upon whatever is in the minds of men.
A pluralistic nation whose civil laws allow and protect the practice of anti-Christian cults and heresies will see those cults and heresies appear and will see them actively work against Christianity.
The great hoax that has been perpetrated is that living under a “theocracy” would result in a wicked Church wielding unrighteous power over the people.
In truth, a Christian national government is limited in its actions and creation of laws by what the Bible permits. Without the limiting influence of the Bible as its legal foundation, a government is free to legalize any evil acts it desires, and free to deem illegal anything granted in the Bible as a liberty, or deem illegal even that which is commanded in the Bible. We see this happening in America today, as our Constitution does not avail us of any of the Bible’s judicial framework. We even have legalized murder of unborn children.
The Bible has no example of Churches being master over civil government and also has no example of the civil government being master over Churches. If we use the Bible as our guide, we see that civil government and Churches have two different yet complimentary roles and each has its own domain. Most importantly, we see that coercion to profess faith is, of course, completely unscriptural.
Both the Old and New Testament teach that Churches can call upon civil government to do its Biblical duties, and likewise that civil government can call upon Churches to do their Biblical duties.
National covenanting is not unique to Israel; Scotland has a strong history of national covenanting.
The first full American constitution, The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, adopted the Mosaic law as the basis of Connecticut law, by reference:
“For as much as it hath pleased Almighty God by the wise disposition of his divine providence so to order and dispose of things that we the Inhabitants and Residents of Windsor, Hartford and Wethersfield are now cohabiting and dwelling in and upon the River of Connectecotte and the lands thereunto adjoining; and well knowing where a people are gathered together the word of God requires that to maintain the peace and union of such a people there should be an orderly and decent Government established according to God, to order and dispose of the affairs of the people at all seasons as occasion shall require; do therefore associate and conjoin ourselves to be as one Public State or Commonwealth; and do for ourselves and our successors and such as shall be adjoined to us at any time hereafter, enter into Combination and Confederation together, to maintain and preserve the liberty and purity of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus which we now profess, as also, the discipline of the Churches, which according to the truth of the said Gospel is now practiced amongst us; as also in our civil affairs to be guided and governed according to such Laws, Rules, Orders and Decrees as shall be made, ordered, and decreed as followeth:”
And later in the document:
“4. It is Ordered, sentenced, and decreed, that no person be chosen Governor above once in two years, and that the Governor be always a member of some approved Congregation, and formerly of the Magistracy within this Jurisdiction; and that all the Magistrates, Freemen of this Commonwealth; and that no Magistrate or other public officer shall execute any part of his or their office before they are severally sworn, which shall be done in the face of the court if they be present, and in case of absence by some deputed for that purpose.”
