Before she was killed in the Newtown school massacre, 6-year-old Catherine Violet Hubbard raised money from returnable bottles and cans to buy bones for dogs at the pound and designed business cards for an imaginary animal shelter, listing herself as "caretaker."
Her pretend animal shelter is now on track to become a reality as the state prepares to transfer 34 acres of a former psychiatric facility to a foundation raising money to build an animal sanctuary to honor the life of the little girl who was one of 20 first-graders killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

I was brought up real close to Newtown, so I know the area. That abandoned psychiatric facility and its grounds are a good place for an animal shelter. It'll be a nice memorial. JMHO

There is an abandoned psychiatric facility fairly close to where I live, that was allowed to deteriorate and can not be restored, and my state government is determined to close more psychiatric hospitals. The number of people with severe mental illness is NOT declining and they are not all best cared for outside of a hospital.
I also know someone who recently had a psychotic reaction to a medication and was kept for nearly a week in over-crowded and non-therapeutic conditions, two nights in the ER before a psych bed could be found - get them semi-stable and get them out is the philosophy. There is no long term care.
I knew someone who with her husband was killed by their schizophrenic son, who they could not force into treatment.
It’s not just the physical facilities; it’s the laws that make the difference. But the insane never went away because of the new drugs and new laws and deinstitutionalization.
The insane are still with us - they are in their parents’ homes or on the streets or in jail - and sometimes they run amok and kill.
Changing the laws, not the gun laws, but the laws dealing with the mentally ill, would be a better monument to the children and teachers killed at Newtown.

Why is it absurd? If the little girl had worked toward such a dream, I don’t see anything wrong with honoring her by seeing it carried out.
Or, are you one of those who thinks that because there are abortions in the world any acts of kindness and responsible dominion over animals are wrong?

it’s where the sanctuary will be that makes it a sick, sad joke.
a functioning psychiatric hospital system and laws dealing with severe mental illness in Connecticut might have saved those children and teachers, and even that madman and his mother.
How would Newtown ever heal if it were the location of that horrific tragedy and the place where the mentally ill were housed?
But using that space well for the new purpose won’t keep the psychiatric system from otherwise getting improved. Yes, there’s a certain irony that could be deduced, but I still think it is a positive response to a tragic situation.
