The 10 most corrupt states in the U.S.

New research takes a look at decades of corruption convictions to find the crookedest states in the union.

When we think of government corruption (as one tends to do), our biased minds often gravitate to thoughts of military juntas and third world governments. But, of course, corruption is everywhere, in one form or another. And it’s costing U.S. citizens big time.

A new study from researchers at the University of Hong Kong and Indiana University estimates that corruption on the state level is costing Americans in the 10 most corrupt states an average of $1,308 per year, or 5.2% of those states’ average expenditures per year.

 1. Mississippi
2. Louisiana
3. Tennessee
4. Illinois
5. Pennsylvania
6. Alabama
7. Alaska
8. South Dakota
9. Kentucky
10. Florida

Exactly. New Jersey has to be first. And the amount of corruption in Hawaii would knock your socks off. The most corrupt states will be the ones most heavily unionized, not a list of cheap shots at the South.

All due to State Pen Micheal Mann.

“It maybe but I”m curious why you think that?”

OK, I am prejudice. Having spent birth + 50 years in Tennessee I did not see the corruption. Maybe that is too subjective.

Who gets to define “corruption?”

************

Good question.....

....

The researchers studied more than 25,000 convictions of public officials for violation of
federal corruption laws between 1976 and 2008 as well as patterns in state spending to develop
a corruption index that estimates the most and least corrupt states in the union.

What the hell does University of Hong Kong have to do with ranking anything in this country?

China certainly has an interest in corruption in our country.

Who buys our government bonds, including state bonds?

Not to mention State Senator Vincent Fumo (Felony, Philadelphia); the Oare sisters; and Jerry Sandusky (swept under by then AG-now Governor Corbett)!!!

Because of Delbert Hoseman and a few others, Mississippi has identified and prosecuted more criminals than the State has in the past. This past Republican Primary has uncovered much more and I think there will be more to come.

Thanks. I”m not faulting your conclusion. I was just interested in your basis for it.

Apparently this study looked at convictions over a number of years and in relation to gov’t
contracts to reach their list.

Thanks.

In other words, the title of the article should be The Ten Most Stupid Corrupt States in the U.S..

Only because it is NOT a state keeps DC off the list.

Pound for pound/people for people/sq mile for sq mile, DC is more corrupt than any other area in the country.

The only thing that keeps the ‘lid on it’ is their strict gun laws.

Much the same as Chicago and New York, just imagine what hell wholes they would be if people were allowed to arm themselves.

I always hire the University of Hong Kong (handed over to communist China) to assess corruption in America. Makes perfect sense.

No state can hold a candle to the corruption existing and thriving in Washington DC aka District of Columbia. Illinois as such can top the list due to Chicago’s Criminal Political Machine.
