Did Saddam Have WMDs After All: ISIS Overruns Iraq Chemical Weapons 'Mega-Facility'
zero hedge ^ | 6/19/14 | Tyler Durden

With all eyes firmly focused on what really matters (the oil refineries), The Telegraph reports that ISIS has over-run a Saddam Hussein-era chemical weapons (CW) complex. The al-Muhanna 'mega-facility', about 60 miles south of Baghdad, gives the jihadists access to disused stores of hundreds of tonnes of potentially deadly poisons including mustard gas and sarin. The US state department is 'concerned' but "do not believe that the complex contains CW materials of military value." However, as a former commander of Britain's chemical weapons regiment warned, "we have seen that ISIS has used chemicals in explosions in Iraq before and has carried out experiments in Syria." This is likely great for ISIS 2014 Annual Report; but, of course, the other awkward question is: does this mean Saddam did have WMDs (and ISIS found them) after all?

As The Telegraph reports, the jihadist group bringing terror to Iraq overran a Saddam Hussein chemical weapons complex on Thursday...

Isis invaded the al-Muthanna mega-facility 60 miles north of Baghdad in a rapid takeover that the US government said was a matter of concern.

The facility was notorious in the 1980s and 1990s as the locus of Saddam’s industrial scale efforts to develop a chemical weapons development programme.

During its peak in the late 1980s to early 1990s, Iraq produced bunkers full of chemical munitions.

A CIA report on the facility said that 150 tons of mustard were produced each year at the peak from 1983 and pilot-scale production of Sarin began in 1984.

Its most recent description of al-Muthanna in 2007 paints a disturbing picture of chemicals strewn throughout the area.

“Two wars, sanctions and UN oversight reduced Iraqi’s premier production facility to a stockpile of old damaged and contaminated chemical munitions (sealed in bunkers), a wasteland full

Holly molly. Think I need to get some more moonshine. The reason they could not remove the chemical WMD was because the facility was bombed during desert storm. The bombing made the bunkers too hazardous to enter.

Here is a typical example of one of the type of bunkers they had to seal with cement.

There is no way S. Hussein, not to be confused with B. Hussein, had weapons of mass destruction. Bush lied about that. My “I’m smarter than you” daughter said so. /s

Many of us know there were WMDs because they were found in Iraq by our troops.

Others refuse to admit it and continue to spout that garbage.....a D Congressman did this morning on CSPAN.

They just won”t admit the truth.

They just won”t admit the truth.

They cannot admit the truth, or had not been able to admit the truth, and we now know exactly why. The WMD that was there was bombed during Desert Storm and during Gulf War II. The bunkers holding these munitions were too dangerous to enter due to the bombing. So they could not say there were WMD in Iraq that could not be removed because of their own bombing campaign. They needed plausible deniability and they found none.

Well DUH! Of course he had WMD. One only needed to visit the mass graves of Kurds that he gassed to death. But that narrative never fit with the media’s agenda...........

...you had to mix two drums to have the deadly chemical. ...

Those are called binary weapons. For the safety of friendly forces during the storage, handling and loading phases, IIRC, ALL US and NATO chemical weapons are binary. The two components are mixed when the containing weapon is fired/dropped.

It has been 36 years since I was the Nuclear, Biological & Chemical (NBC) Warfare Officer for my squadron, so my memory may be fuzzy. If any Freepers have more accurate info, please correct me.

at the time, I heard and EOD warrant officer interviewed who said something to the effect that, “we found a can of Folgers, a pack of filters, fresh water, and a Mr. Coffee machine, but all the media reports is that there is no steaming hot cup of fresh brewed coffee.”

Really? That’s your answer? Suddenly they know all about this place and it’s history? And what is there? Evidently this place was known to western journalists for a long time. ‘

There is no way they could have developed the story on this place overnight.

Go away you partisan troll.

Now why did she want to do that? I suspect the meeting between Murdock and obamas friend Valerie Jarrett had something to do with it.

Have a theory I'll throw out. Anyone with common sense knew sadam had WMDs. The Kurds were the proof. Now for the theory part ... (imho) as much as possible the truth was kept ‘classified’ or as ‘classified’ as could be attained. The ‘classified’ was done for the reason of not releasing information to terror organizations and other terrorist governments. sadam did probably send many of his chemical and biological weapons to Syria. Another ‘classified’ tidbit but how many of us would want the terror organizations to have first hand information of what was there and the location of such. Some terrorist government states would not be willing to share their programs of chemicals and biological weapons information with their population, their media, or even other terrorist states. Too dangerous (imho). Being as sophisticated as terror organizations tend to be ... it is only a matter of time till they use chemicals or biological weapons in mass. The many ‘classified’ aspects show me the fear of the terror organizations using these weapons by even the terrorist states plus the civilized governments ... NOT that the weapons never existed but that fear caused many aspects of the weapons programs, when found to be (imho) 'classified'. My humble opinion ...

the cow made accusations...

Indeed! She should have asked questions such as "what's your favorite color?" or "which comic book character do you prefer--Mickey Mouse or Porkie Pig?"

Megyn Kelly has gone over to the other side!

The article says it has potentially usable chemical. It must have been far more usable 12 years ago.
