The flip side: Some years ago I talked with a guy who ran a business up in Oregon. He said the favorite trick of the legals and illegals, of any country, who didn’t work under the table, was to claim eight dependents on their W-4 and pay little if any taxes except for SS. They only claimed eight, because at nine, the IRS, at that time, wanted proof.

He said it really ticked him off to see guys as young as 18 pull this scam but nobody was interested in following up.
