A plan, now stealthily making its way through state legislatures with astonishing speed, would junk the Electoral College and award the presidency to the winner of the popular vote.
The plan involves an Interstate Compact where states would commit to select electors pledged to vote for the national popular vote winner regardless of how their own state voted. When enough states pass this law -- sufficient to cast the Electoral College's majority 270 votes -- it will take effect.
The Electoral College will become a vestigial anachronism.
So far, nine states and the District of Columbia -- casting 136 electoral votes -- have joined moving half way to the 270 needed to put the compact into effect. The ratifying states are: Maryland, New Jersey, Illinois, Hawaii, Washington, Massachusetts, DC, Vermont, California, and Rhode Island.
Both houses in New York have passed it and its on Governor Cuomo’s desk.
And, it has already passed one house in: Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Oregon. These states, plus New York represent 107 votes. Combined with the others they are up to 242 votes . They need 270.
Who is pushing this?
All of those ratifying voted for Obama as did eight of the 10 one-house states.
The Movement is funded, in part, by the Center for Voting and Democracy, a George Soros-funded election group.

Let say its Clinton vs Cruz and in Maryland Hillary gets 55% and her electors will vote in December for the President. Cruz wins the national popular vote at 51%.
There is a better chance of an Ayatollah renouncing Islam than for any of those democrat electors voting for Cruz.
The electoral college also mitigates the tyranny of the masses. Without the electoral college, sparsely populated states like Wyoming, Nevada or Montana would have even less voice. All power would be held by major population centers like Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Seattle, Atlanta...are any of these cities being run to your satisfaction???
In the case of a dispute, such as in 2000, we might all wish Inauguration Day was still March 4.

That is correct. Kids are not taught that the Electoral College is there to deal with when the supposed winner bows out suddenly or dies before assuming office. Back then, a quick vote was unthinkable. Just getting it out and the results back in could take more months than the person would have in office. Every eventuality had to be considered.
We assume our modern conveniences will continue. But we are increasingly dependent on the internet when outside powers could cut us off. And the phone companies are increasingly breaking up.
The electoral college makes it possible for us to handle better the unforeseeable.
But to those who wish it, I have only one saying in Mind "Be Careful for what you wish for; You Just Might Get It". Conservatives could win enough states then they might want to change their mind.
Always put the shoe on the other foot before one goes walking out on thin political ice.
Electoral votes are established as ONE for each USRep and Senator.
A truly representative solution would be to cast electoral votes by congressional district, plus the two that reflect senators can be cast in accordance with the popular vote within the state.
That fixes a lot of crap, quick, fast and in a hurry.

Voting is broken down by county. You win the county you get a point. Whoever wins the most counties gets the electoral vote.
Takes cheating out of the equation because who cares if you get 150% of the vote. It’s still only worth a point. This should also be used by the Republicans for disenfranchisement.
You see, if Philly wants to vote 150%, their voters are not disenfranchised. On the other hand, voting at 150%, disenfranchises the rest of the state as their vote no longer counts.
Beauty of this? No need to change the constitution. It is done on the state level. Electoral votes remain the same.
Looks like there is no end to the communists takeover of America. I have a sick feeling that the communist Democrats will win all future elections.
States enter into agreements with other states all the time. An example are the recognition of other states’ firearms carry permits.
The inevitability of this is going to backfire on them. As the Judiciary will then decide who gets what Electoral votes and they will base than on Proportional standards.
Once one state gives its electoral votes to the popular looser of the state, but popular vote winner overall, then it’s done for.
Remember, The votes need to be certified, so when the party in control of Congress certifies such an action, all hell will break loose, when an opposing party de-certifies based all hell will break loose as well.
And Valerie Jarrett was quoted as saying "We have two Justices ready to go." How would they rule if one of the conservative justices leaves the Court?
This crap will truly fundamentally transform America.
Look at the way the EC is distributed now. States with high populations already have the majority of electoral college votes. States with few EC votes are rarely campaigned in except when they would make a difference.

I’d hope so. Otherwise, once the “threshold” has been passed, DimocRAT presidential candidates will win based upon massive vote fraud in hundreds and thousands of blue precincts in blue states-—the type of precinct that exists in Philadelphia reporting votes of 18,978 (I just made up that number because I don’t have time to pull actual past counts—it’s in the “ball park”) for the DimocRAT and zero (I didn’t make that easily remembered number up) for the Republican.
If this issue ever got to the Court, it would rule 9-0 against the enforceability of the compact. There has never been any doubt about what the Compact Clause means.

The progressives’ plan is NOT to do away with the Constitutional electoral college, but have participating states electoral votes go to the candidate with the most (fraudulent or real) votes nationwide—regardless of the vote in the participating state.
And they always ask the consent of Congress.
Absolutely. The only way to attenuate the tyranny/ignorance of the masses in population centers is to provide for a single electoral vote per county then two electoral votes per State.
Very true. People like to pretend the Electoral College & its current winner-takes-all approach does not already disenfranchise many.
For those of us who refuse to support the Big Two, the current system is the most significant barrier to the national rise of additional political parties (which isn't to say I like the system referred to in the article any better).
That’s true - but a popular vote would just make it worse.
