It is the duty of every mariner.

The 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS Convention) obliges the

“master of a ship at sea which is in a position to be able to provide assistance, on receiving information from any source that persons are in distress at sea, is bound to proceed with all speed to their assistance, if possible informing them or the search and rescue service that the ship is doing so…”

The 1979 International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR Convention) obliges State Parties to

“…ensure that assistance be provided to any person in distress at sea… regardless of the nationality or status of such a person or the circumstances in which that person is found”… and to “provide for their initial medical or other needs , and deliver them to a place of safety.”

This morning “they” said it was a 3 year old. Is a 1 year old a toddler?

Interesting. So that applies to military as well as civilian vessels?

Okay, well, then I stand corrected. I sure hope the parents have to pay for the rescue.

Come on, wouldn’t any parent take a child recovering from s salmonella on a long sea voyage far from medical help, in an unseaworthy boat?

After all, they unsuccessfully tried last time while the mother was pregnant with the now sick child.

Sailing around the world is certainly not without its dangers. For the most part the dangers can be managed.

The parents didn’t call the Navy. They called the Coast Guard. Something many many other people do.

I love my kids (1, 3 and 5yo) more than life itself but there isn’t enough money on this planet to get me to circumnavigate the world with them.

Heck, it’s a Saturday at home and it feels like the longest 14 hours of my life.

What kind of idiot parent risk taking a 1 year old on a voyage around the world?

The kind of people who have been raised to believe that help is always just a phone call to the government away and that they are entitled to it.

I have done a fair bit of off shore sailing and would never expect help at the press of a button. The whole idea of cruising is self reliance. If there is any reason you can think of that would cause you to call the freaking NAVY to bail you out you really should stay ashore.

Just my opinion.

Yes, all people should just stay home where its nice and safe.

No. But we who go "Out there" should not expect to be rescued at the expense of others.

GMTA..but in this case...I dont suspect it took either of us much work to come to that conclusion.

Kids in trailers behind bicycles on city streets are one thing but circling the Globe on a sailboat with a 1 year old aboard is entirely another... unless the one year old is a Family PET!

funny with in a month the derelict sailboat ran aground on Maui

A good many "Rescues" at sea involve frightened, uncomfortable people being removed from perfectly seaworthy boats. Bringing a sailboat alongside a large ship is what causes most of the damage. Often the boats are found still floating months later.
