They should carry insurance, I do, but thats kind of beside the point. At what point do we refuse to rescue people or charge them? If there are assets in the area the crews certainly benefit from the real world experience.

How do we know these people are liberals? because they have a boat? because they are teaching their children? because they are reliant upon themselves?

I’m really confused why people such as this garner so much hatred from supposed conservatives.

I mean they should have insurance to reimburse a CG/military rescue. I don’t think we refuse to rescue, unless it puts the potential rescuers at too much risk. And we charge when it’s an above-and-beyond, rather than within the scope of regular patrols, etc.. There is some line to be drawn there, but it makes sense to draw one.

It could well make sense to have cruise ships or their insurance companies cover such costs.

If it were a working vessel, it would be part of the cost of doing business, and if it were a pleasure vessel, such as in this case, it could be the same.

It could have been prevented by parents with a little common sense

I'm glad the child can be saved. But in these cases of parent idiocy, I do hope the parents pay a very burdensome charge for the services.

But they may also be delivering meals to the poor folk on the boat at the same time so it is justified. That is their primary purpose!

Those ads are an embarrassment. Are the admirals aiming the advertising at Obama? Or is Obama pushing this on the Navy?

If I did that, who would call you on your regularly posted BS? Nah, I’ll live forever just to upset you.

We must pay for ignorant selfishness of those that would take a one year old on a round-the-world sailboat ride.

When I was 10 and my brother was 8, my family sailed around the world. I did not consider my parents ignorant or selfish. Sailors are amongst the most self-reliant people in the world. The knowledge that I gained on that voyage is immeasurable.

Yes, instead of educating people regarding the purpose of the military, and the irresponsibility of hauling a baby into the open sea, let’s bow our knees to the children who suddenly get to decide what is right and wrong.

Gosh, what is the purpose of even HAVING laws or Constitutions or wise counsel of the past? Every generation ought to just ask the “young people” what THEY think is best, and we can structure our society to THOSE ideas. Yeah, that’ll work.

I have already acknowledged that if indeed international law calls for our Navy to race to rescue these folks who behaved do foolishly, then they should do so. I hope they have to remunerate the taxpayer.

The “heartless” argument is liberal crank....I know you probably didn’t mean it in the same context, but it is the same thing that is used to create giant welfare programs...because people are in desperate need for help.

What part of the Constitution PER SE requires the federal government to rescue sick citizens in the open sea?

One more thought: if our government were not so busy confiscating taxes, property and liberty, there very well may be NO NEED for a military ship to perform this act, because PRIVATE ENTITIES might exist that could do the job better, cheaper, and more efficiently.

I question the use of military hardware and personnel in what is clearly NOT a national security matter.

The boat is a little out of range of the coast guard's jurisdiction: " A U.S. Navy warship reached a crippled sailboat hundreds of miles off the Mexican coast..."

These nitwits should have come back to shore.

A full keel, heavy displacement, 36 foot Hans Christian is a blue water sailor. It was built to do ocean cruises. Stuff happens. We have a 40 ft Yorktown which is also a blue water sailor. We were off the coast of San Diego with no wind and our engine stopped. Our radio became so staticy that you could neither hear nor speak. Luckily we keep a handheld radio and GPS aboard. We waited for enough wind to limp into port via sail. Stuff happens.

In 1962 or ‘63 while in transit from the Caribbean back to Norfolk, in the wake of a big storm my ship was tasked with the rescue of a sailing vessel, the Northern Light. She had storm damage to her masts and her engine had quit.

We were the nearest ship to her, and took her in tow until the Coast Guard arrived the next day. The seaman’s code is that you render aid if at all possible.

Looks a lot like ours except that is a center cockpit. Hate them cause it causes space problems. Our cockpit is aft and our boat is newer.

Don’t you have a better hobby than this? Darts? Cat videos? Self improvement books? Because all you are doing is entertaining me and annoying everyone else.

9 or 10 is quite a bit different than taking toddlers along.

IMO.
