Start spending all of it to live like so many of the rest of us instead of socking half of it away.

Good point.

Its expensive to live in Washington and $174,000 doesn’t go very far. You have to maintain two offices, pay your staff and have two places to live.

Unless you’re independently wealthy, good luck with life as a congresscritter.

It is true that it is not that much.

But do they not have expense accounts beyond salary?

"I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid," Moran said.

You are over paid, by about $174k.

What we really need is a part time Congress. Send the bastards home and let them come back for about a week twice a year. It sure would make America “a better place.” Maybe if the piggies had to get a real job when they are not in the District of Corruption, they wouldn’t get so excited about raising taxes all of the time.

“But do they not have expense accounts beyond salary?”

Don’t they get to keep all their extra campaign cash when they retire?

But do they not have expense accounts beyond salary?

They do, but the reason they all retire as multimillionaires is not their salary, nor their expense accounts.

It's the bribes.

If all he got was his basic salary I might, just might have some sympathy. However, with all the perks, benefits and bribes, I fart in his general direction (to paraphrase an expression from one of my favorite movies).

The cost of maintaining two offices and 2 staffs is not paid out of the Congressmen’s or Senators’ salaries. So is most travel.

They often DO have to maintain 2 distant residences, but often those who don’t bring their families to DC share an apt. Some DO live in their offices.

No analysis of Jim Moran’s financial ability to live on $174K in the DC area is complete without looking at his Murphy’s of Alexandria bar tab ...

Live within your means. It can be done. These Congress critters want to wrap themselves in material things befitting a king, so large are their egos. A big fancy luxury car, servants, huge party house, etc. In the days of Lincoln, the servants of the people lived responsibly. $174K is plenty, particularly since they also get separate money for staff and expenses, as well as extra freebies at taxpayer expense. Sickening! Taxpayers are getting reamed.
