Like any good foreigner, Obama is willing to kill the economy Americans just won’t kill.

I’m surprised more people don’t support reform for this; the fact that there is a threshold at all means the business community has placed a de facto cap on many people’s earnings while retaining the right to work them to death. Unpaid overtime has always been a way for an employer to screw workers; I like seeing companies forced to pay out when it is determined they were supposed to be paying people OT for years but didn’t.

If workers continuously feel screwed, they’ll continuously vote Democrat; we’re going through our own communist revolution now in response to the dire straits many Americans feel themselves in.

The comments at the NYT are what you’d expect...

I say nothing will change at the corporate profit end. They will “adjust” accordingly and the people Obama thinks he is “helping” will find themselves worse off now than they where before.

This article and how Obama plans changes to the the law is totally unclear. Salaried employees are considered exempt. Meaning they do not receive hourly pay or over time. Any hourly employee that works over 40 hr a week is paid overtime.

If they change the law eliminating exempt employees below a arbitrary threshold say like $40,000 per year a lot of people will lose their jobs.

I have personally experienced retail chains abusing salaried “managers” by expecting them to put in 60-70 hours per week.

That being said....where does Obama get off doing this with a stroke of his pen?

A true communist believes that employers exploit their employees. This is just one more step toward the complete takeover of the means of production by the government.

Stuart Varney on FNC this morning was very blunt about this: Obama is just trying to buy votes for the 2014 election. That’s what this is all about.

Currently, it is around $11 an hour for managers and $27 an hour for IT employees. I would assume he is going to raise it to at least $15 to $20 an hour for managers. It is going to kill fast food and retail. IT will be a bloodbath if they have to pay programmers and engineers overtime and on-call pay.

So why have salaried employees at all?

Does this apply to the military? They are salaried and are on duty 24/7, in effect making their wage, depending on rank, les than mimimum. Furthermore, if you make less than minimum, whether piece work or salaried, your employer muat make up the difference to bring you to minimum wage level. Will this apply to the military?

Will the imposter also declare that overtime is to be paid for hours worked over 29?

This is idiotic.

I haven’t punched a time card in 30 years.

This idiot would have all us professionals punching time cards.

Hey, moron, we get paid the big bucks because every once in a while, we have to work late and on weekends.

I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THIS!

President Obama, flexing his executive authority once again, plans to order the Labor Department to expand overtime pay requirements to include millions more workers -- in a move likely to rankle the business community.

Maybe he should try this with ALL the people who work at the White House. They can give him the feedback he needs to 'get real'...

I was an hourly employee until about eight years ago when I took a salaried position with another company. It came with a nice bump in pay. I work long hours / weekends when I need to but not that often. If my position is shoved back into the hourly category a few things could happen:

1. My job title could change to keep me salaried.

2. I could be replaced by someone who makes much less per hour but gets overtime so that the cost of my position doesn’t go up.

3. They could juggle my hours to try and minimize the impact.
