Ten city blocks of Manhattan became a river of black Sunday as 50,000 dark-clad ultra-Orthodox Jews took to the streets to protest Israel's proposal to force their young boys into its army. The gathering took up a stretch of Water Street, with demonstrators standing behind police barricades amid tight security as they prayed in solidarity with their brethren in Israel. 'These kids, a lot of them don't know how to hold a gun. They don't know what physical warfare is,' said Long Island rabbinical student Shmuel Gruis.

In Israel, you are correct. Not the USA.
“OK, so the Israeli government could just tell them: have it your own way. While you can live here, you are responsible for your own security — Israeli army elements will no longer protect your community, plus no more public assistance for you.”
The problem is there is (like in the USA) a thin line between liberal idiots and conservatives, made worse because it is a parliamentary system.
The Satmar have a party that shifts alliances depending on who gives them the most goodies.
“But Hitler eliminated the private ownership of firearms for everyone in Germany well before Kristalnacht.”
Actually, he opened it up for “German citizens.”
Of course, Jews and the like were not “German citizens” and they had their weapons taken — made possible by an existing registry.
“, many of these ultra-Orthodox men don’t provide tangible support for their families. They live off welfare and impregnate their wives. I understand it’s their tradition, but I also know that a man’s job is to provide for his family, not see that they suck off the teat of government.”
It is “many,” but it is not “most.”
Romans? I though most priests back then were Irish.
“Understand this as well: studying Torah is the highest Jewish duty.”
Perhaps. I understand the highest mitzvah of a Jew is the preservation of Jewish life. If you house catches on fire when studying the Torah, would you not be required to leave the house?
Regardless, studying Torah is not the ONLY duty.
There is a time for every mitzvah in a balanced life.
The religion was run by Roman conquerors..and it still shows. Doesn’t matter if they were/are Irish or Chinese.
You mean the religion that brought the Jewish concept of ethical monotheism to the world?
Its more than just that....ask anyone lives around Monroe NY
yet Freepers think orthodox means great by default
By that logic..every time an islamic terrorist beheads an infidel to enhance the Islamic Caliphate..they are helping to spread the "Jewish" idea of one G-d. Polese...spare me.
The Romans tried to exterminate the Jews and rewrote their history and religion..including how Jesus died and who he was, all for their advantage...privilege, money and power.
In Israel...many many Hasidim live on the arm....
Its tension no question.....for other Jews
But the Orthodox prime the guilt of the secular for being non religious....they get paid with tax dollars for being observant
Its an odd bunch....I’ve known a few I liked but they are very very different
Average goy Freeper would have more in common with secular Jew....particularly Israeli
But what defines that unicorn....a Jewish conservative is family and roots more than anything....which is why its rare
And...being observant for a Jew is very different than for Christian
Its more about practices....
Thank you for your wise and reasoned response.
“Thank you for your wise and reasoned response.”
Well, I got my angry one out of the way in Post 100.
I went back and read it.
It is a righteous anger. You are within your rights and have earned it!
I assume you are talking about the Talmudic references regarding Jesus?
Nevertheless, it is too many. It infuriates me when a family who already does not support itself deliberately has more children. Most of the families I personally know who do this are actually orthodox Catholics (which I myself am). They receive WIC, CHiP and food stamps. Perhaps I was projecting a bit with my statement but it does seem the Hasidic tradition of sending a husband and father out to study Torah all day while his wife bears many children is a recipe for this sort of thing. I'm familiar with Kiryas Joel where something like 40% are on food stamps. I don't want to take food from hungry children's mouths, but I feel their parents should be more responsible about taking care of their own instead of planning to use the government to feed their children.
The Ultra-Orthodox Haredi sects vote how their rabbis tell them. In New York City, their leaders make deals with Democrats for welfare and special privileges. They will vote for Republican mayors.
Very sophisticated response. Thanks.
True in some ways (comment #68) about Israel, secular states and Prophets. When we’re there in time, all will know it. I would still be afraid to oppose Jewish people being in Israel, though, regardless of the mix of people involved. Some of each of the various groups obviously have their purpose, and many still don’t know it.
But then that brings us around to who is most physically involved in preserving and teaching Torah the most, too (Chassidim). In a big way, they’re not so withdrawn. Some of them are teaching those of us who’ve asked honestly and repeatedly, when all others refuse (except Reform, but I’m not talking about Reform).
