“, many of these ultra-Orthodox men don’t provide tangible support for their families. They live off welfare and impregnate their wives. I understand it’s their tradition, but I also know that a man’s job is to provide for his family, not see that they suck off the teat of government.”

It is “many,” but it is not “most.”

Nevertheless, it is too many. It infuriates me when a family who already does not support itself deliberately has more children. Most of the families I personally know who do this are actually orthodox Catholics (which I myself am). They receive WIC, CHiP and food stamps. Perhaps I was projecting a bit with my statement but it does seem the Hasidic tradition of sending a husband and father out to study Torah all day while his wife bears many children is a recipe for this sort of thing. I'm familiar with Kiryas Joel where something like 40% are on food stamps. I don't want to take food from hungry children's mouths, but I feel their parents should be more responsible about taking care of their own instead of planning to use the government to feed their children.
