Ukraine’s Ultranationalists Show Surprising Strength at Polls (Nov 8, 2012)
NY Times ^ | 11/8/12 | DAVID M. HERSZENHORN

The last time Oleg Tyagnibok was a member of Ukraine’s Parliament, his colleagues kicked him out over a fiery speech in which he described how Ukrainians, during World War II, bravely fought Muscovites, Germans, Jews “and other scum,” and then used slurs to refer to the “Jewish-Russian mafia, which rules in Ukraine.”

Eight years later, Mr. Tyagnibok is preparing to return to Parliament, not as a lone member of a broader coalition, as he was when he was ejected, but as the leader of Svoboda, the ultranationalist, right-wing party that will control 38 of 450 seats, or about 8.5 percent of the national legislature.

Svoboda’s surprising show of strength in the Oct. 29 election — polls had predicted that the party would fail to meet the 5 percent threshold to enter Parliament — has stirred alarm, including warnings from Israel about the rise of anti-Semitism and xenophobia in Ukraine, a former Soviet republic and a place with a firsthand knowledge of ethnic violence and genocide.

But in an interview in the downtown office building that Svoboda shares with an insurance company and a dental clinic named Smile, Mr. Tyagnibok said that fear of his party was misplaced and the accusations of racism and extremism unfounded.

“Svoboda is not an anti-Semitic party,” he said, seated behind a desk, a sport jacket stretched by his barrel-sized chest, his huge hands folded in front of him, speaking slowly and firmly in Ukrainian. “Svoboda is not a xenophobic party. Svoboda is not an anti-Russian party. Svoboda is not an anti-European party. Svoboda is simply and only a pro-Ukrainian party. And that’s it.”

Of course, that was not it.

Mr. Tyagnibok was just beginning to demonstrate the smooth charm that has helped Svoboda, which means “Freedom,” build support beyond its traditional stronghold in the Ukrainian-speaking

Anyone who thinks a tiny group like this justifies Russia’s incursion is crazy. If that is the precedent, prepare to surrender lots of territory to Mexico

The “tiny” groups you are so fond of dismissing as harmless are the the ones with the molotov cocktails and the weapons looted from the police stations in Western Ukraine.

McCain and Obama tried to make your same case regarding Al Qaeda in Syria and almost got us into another war. Pay no mind to that “freedom fighter” eating the heart of a captured Syrian soldier...

Agree. There are far-right parties in France, Italy and Greece that are quite popular and yet these countries are ultimately ruled by Brussels and the European Central Bank.

The question is whether Ukraine will be ruled by Moscow and Gazprom or by Brussels and the European Central Bank.

What remains to be seen is whether Putin will be satisfied with taking just Crimea, or just Eastern Ukraine, or whether he believes he will be able to take the whole country into the Russian embrace.

Where did I argue for the US to get involved?

A bit more than 38 members of Parliament voted to remove the corrupt dictator from power if I do recall correctly.

After amnesty these same arguments are going to be used to justify handing parts of the US back to Mexico.

And there are similar groups in the West with similar vote %. Do we let Russia roll in and take over? Heck, the Chinese Nationalist Party was a fascist party. They took massive amounts of aid from Hitler during the Sino-Japanese War. Should we not have backed the Chinese with arms, equipment and personnel against the Japanese? The Kuwaitis, like the rest of the Arabs, have always hated both Israel and the Jews. Should we have stood by after Iraq invaded and annexed Kuwait?

The one constant in the last several centuries about Russia is its zeal for land grabs. What you've missed is the far larger Russian historical responsibility - in particular the Russian material support and training for Korean and Vietnamese communists that killed 100K GI's. Russia's Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with Nazi Germany gave Germany a free hand to invade the West and Russia provided Germany's supplies for the invasion. As a result, millions more Jews were killed than would otherwise have been during the Holocaust. What about the 400K GI's who died because of a war the Russians made possible?

The Marxist in the White House is doing just fine without Putin's help.
