Paul: GOP too narrow
The Hill ^ | 2/8/14 | Mike Lillis

Posted on 02/08/2014 10:19:25 AM PST by jimbo123

Promoting Republican outreach to Hispanics, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said this week that the GOP must expand its appeal if it expects to remain politically relevant.

"The party has to be bigger across the country, not only appealing to people of various ethnic background but various economic backgrounds," Paul said Friday during a sweep through Texas, CNN reported.

The remarks came following a meeting with George P. Bush, the 37-year-old son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who's vying to become the next Texas Land Commissioner. Paul, a conservative firebrand who's long-been critical of establishment Republicans like the Bush family, declined to endorse the younger Bush, CNN reported. But he praised Bush's Spanish-language prowess as one key to attracting a broader swath of voters to the GOP's tent.

“The fact that he is a fluent Spanish speaker and spoken to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, it’s good for our party,” Paul said. “I think having people who are trying to make the party bigger is good."

He’s not right in the head. Not for this job. And not for the presidency

Diversity is a diversion democrats use. The are not diverse enough to include constitutionalists. Anyone, including this guy with the weird hairdo, who talks about diversity, is not paying attention to doing their job, which has nothing to do with chasing diversity

We are a melting pot. We speak English. We have borders open to anyone willing to contribute

Paul is a weirdo

Rand is building bridges to the Bush fundraisers and amnesty overlords.

The problem is that most Reagan Democrats are now six feet under the earth. There are no “Reagan Democrats” and 1980 was 34 years ago.

Now I realize that the originals can only vote if they were registered in Chicago. But their successors exist today in factory working family members who were doing well then saw their jobs exported and their ' middle class riches' dissipated in their search for work. So a "Reagan Democrat" is one who vote for the GOP if they ever find another Reagan and things get good again.

If the GOP would stop siding with its corporate paymasters and become the party that protects American workers, it would reverse the current downward spiral. Knock off the specific outreach to minorities and immigrants and concentrate on issues that appeal to all voters.

Bears repeating, frequently.

For some reason, I will never trust Rand Paul. Don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s “Paul”.

No, Paul! Your job is to convince voters why the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and the Federal Papers should appeal to all, all the time.

You just lost my vote. Period.

“Knock off the specific outreach to minorities and immigrants and concentrate on issues that appeal to all voters.”

A definition is required here. Who are all voters?

In 1896, the current wisdom was that the Republican Civil War coalition was finished, and that mass immigration, coupled with the merger of the Democratic and Populist parties, was the electoral wave of the future. The new Chairman of the Republican Party, Marcus Aurelius Hanna of Ohio, saw it differently.

The strategy he employed would like still work to the extent in many areas the Republican party does not ask for their vote. I see three main problems with it though.

1. This is a long term strategy costing significant funds upfront giving returns in out years in the form of votes.

2. The history of bad blood between the RNC and conservative activists. Much of the conservative movement has been conditioned to see any outreach to anyone else as an attempt to marginalize them.

3. The media currently serving those groups is hostile to Republicans and will take every chance they have to slander them. Hard to convince people of anything if you introduce yourself as a Republican and they leave the room.

I disagree with you.

“Reagan Democrats” are pretty much how I joined the GOP.

Reagan was all for American businesses.

Bring back American jobs.

Rand Paul's immigration speech
...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.

Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.

Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.

Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.

If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...

This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.

Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.

Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reform
Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but "Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration." ...he would create a bipartisan panel to determine how many visas should be granted for workers already in the United States and those who might follow... [and the buried lead] "Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers...

Correct you are. Stay conservative but embrace every one, make them feel welcome and THEN work on changing their hearts and minds. By excluding them up front, it is a lose-lose proposition.

Yes, I know the difference. I was a legal immigrant to this great country 40+ years ago. All groups we exclude with a knee jerk reaction is the basic mistake. Every group has some conservative people in it. They just do not know it. There is saying in Sanskrit which tells you hospitality is the first step to friendship and conversion to your way of thinking. Shutting the front door in their face is a lose-lose proposition.
