A government and sociology professor at Harvard writes that the Tea Party is more likely than not to "win in the end" in an age when Americans are becoming more removed from Washington and distrusting the federal government and their elected officials.
"Tea Party forces will still win in the end," Theda Skocpol writes, unless moderate Republicans can defeat them. Skocpol concedes that the Tea Party "will triumph just by hanging on long enough" as Americans are getting fed up by "our blatantly manipulated democracy and our permanently hobbled government."
The article, "Why The Tea Party Isn't Going Anywhere," was first published in the journal Democracy, and later reprinted in The Atlantic.
Despite the fact that Democrats, the mainstream media, and the Republican establishment again were predicting the "demise of the Tea Party" immediately after the government shutdown ended, Skocpol doesn't believe so.
"But we have heard all this before," she writes. "The Tea Partys hold on the GOP persists beyond each burial ceremony."
Skocpol and Vanessa Williamson published a book in 2011 that "showed how bottom-up and top-down forces intersect to give the Tea Party both leverage over the Republican Party and the clout to push national politics sharply to the right."
"At the grassroots, volunteer activists formed hundreds of local Tea Parties, meeting regularly to plot public protests against the Obama Administration and place steady pressure on GOP organizations and candidates at all levels," they found. "At least half of all GOP voters sympathize with this Tea Party upsurge."

I'm there for the fight, but will beat a strategic retreat should Christie win the nomination.
This is not the time to sit on your hands and hope someone else picks a good candidate. It is time to pick the best candidate, and work to ensure that candidate wins.
I have to PHD and didn't go to Haaaaavaahhd, but it doesn't take a rocket-scientist to realize both parties have left us and suck on ice.
I'd love to know if ( she ) Theda Skocpol has ever gone to a meeting or talked to us good folk at length.
G_d bless her for having a keen sense of the obvious that the rest of her colleagues @ Harvard and Yale will never have...
and assuming Ted Cruz looks like the leading candidate, how will the left bash him? he his latino, therefore too uneducated to be President?
The KEY to clout is our EARLY and sustained coalition around ONE candidate and not a half dozen hair pullers, dividing our finances and allegiances.
Pick our leader and let him run his race on his own terms. When he runs to the middle to enlarge the voter block, get over it...or, get Hillary. Period.
How else do we match the Establishment machine of big cash and smear doctors against our guy?
Thx, xzins
Amen, brother!
And for now there is more to be gained by keeping leftist Republicans unelectable while interjecting debate in the direction of the disaffected from the status of longtime independents.
The compromisers got the Republicans into the state they are in. Damned if following that same course can fix it.
I'm with you. They had better have been conservative before the primary because I'm not buying any move to the right. I'm also don't care what kind of conservative they pick as V.P. in the National elections I will not vote for a President based on the V.P.'s conservative credentials.
I totally agree with that sentiment
An uneducated latino?
Don’t.think.so.
Princeton?
Harvard Law?
Mother an American, Father a native of Cuba?
Depicting latinos as being typically uneducated?
No.
I don’t think they will approach Ted Cruz from those angles.
They’ve already attacked him because his wife works for Goldman Sachs in Houston.
Republicans have attacked him by claiming he misled people into believing he could stop obamacare when he couldn’t.
Republicans have attacked the groups who supported his action as only being in the fight in order to raise money for their organizations.
These types of attacks will intensify from there to worse ones but they’ll be along those lines and not that he is an uneducated latino.
Doesn’t pass the laugh test...
I've said it numerous times: before this is over we're going to be sharing foxholes with anarchists we'd normally be shooting at, because that's the only way the country is going to avoid rule by totalitarians. The latter flatter themselves that they have their hooks in at the moment and are tightening their grip. It's a little like driving tent-pegs into a volcano.
Hell, I would make a better President than Christie.
(Mostly because my #2 goal would be to root out corruption — the #1 would be to follow the Constitution… and I'd even use dirty tricks
to do it.)
If she doesn’t already have tenure she can start looking for a job.
Don't ever forget the dead people vote. They will vote early and often for Democrats.
Dead people are the most reliable Democrat voting block (along with illegal aliens).
God inspired our system.
In the end, God wins.

Any way they can.
And latino won't protect him at all. Remember that George Zimmerman was to them a "white Hispanic."
Duh...!
