At some point in our lives, each of us has said to ourselves, Wow I really wish I didnt have to work. Shortly after making that statement, we snap back into reality and understand we should be productive members of society. This typically includes being employed. Because of this basic economic fact, I found it alarming that more than 1/3 of the work force just doesnt want a job. The Wall Street Journal has the numbers:
34.3%: Share of Americans over age 16 who say they dont want a job, up from about 30% two decades ago. Americans arent just leaving the labor force those who have left it are drifting further away.
Being unemployed is a major problem. Not wanting to be employed is an even bigger one.
In a new paper, economists Regis Barnichon and Andrew Figura divide up those out of the labor force using a simpler standard: whether or not the person says they want a job. And they uncover an interesting previously unnoticed trend: As a share of all those not in the labor force, the number of people who want a job has been generally declining since the early 1980s.
Why would they want to work when they can get free stuff?
For anyone who actually WANTS to be gainfully employed, this headline may be the best news they’ve read in years.
I don’t want a job, but I still work 60 hours a week. :)
Ayn Rand was prophetic about so much, it’s almost spooky. Maybe she was right about this, too. Who is John Galt?
Why would they want a job when they get free Medicaid, free food stamps, free rent subsidy, free lunch & breakfast at schools, free Obama phones, free heat subsidy, free translators at medical facility if can’t understand English, free aid to dependent children, free condoms & birth control pills, subsidized section-8 housing, free daycare for children, on and on and on.
because OUR JOB is to provide to these lazy sacks of excrements who DONT want a job..
They certainly are not uncomfortable in their “poverty”.
“If he will not work, neither should he eat.” —St. Paul
I remember Nazi Pelosi’s eyes lit up as she talked about how wonderful ObamaCare would be because people wouldn’t have to get a job just to get health insurance and perhaps more of them could become artists and writers...
Obviously, she has base.
I honestly don’t mind if somebody doesn’t want to work for a living. Just don’t sit on your porch and complain about how the government isn’t doing enough for you while you leech off the system. And please stay home on Election Day. It is way too exhausting for you.
Why would they want to work when they can get free stuff?
I just can’t see why anyone thinks the free things are so great. Ok you get a slum house, free child care, some food stamps, welfare check for about 800 bucks a month, Obamaphone, and healthcare bennies. I am supposed to be jealous of this and give up my family income of 115K a year to get this free stuff and not work? No thanks. I am not jealous of these people at all.
Read my number 11.....you are prime example of my post.
no no no. Never blame the beggars. It is the politicians who pass the laws are the real culprits. Human beings will take anything which is free. There are a lot of lazy people in the human race. So real culprits are people who actually work for a living and keep voting for those left-wing politicians.
Read my #13.
Unfortunately we live in a socialist society were the many are support by the few. The work ethic is a thing of the past.
The Soviet Union realized this way to late ...
The same thing is true in modern China today, that is why they are a simi communist state, allowing some capitalism. They are realizing that to support their form of government they have to compromise.
Just as a point of information, are they including stay at home moms with a working husband in their numbers of people who “don’t want a job”?
Bingo! Post of the day. That is brilliant and to be honest never thought of it that way. I am so glad you pinged me on this. I may borrow it from time to time.
If you are raise in a slum house, raised on food stamps and get a check from the government every month (not to mention free housing) and free medical care, why would you have a work ethic?
I have no idea.
No, not anymore.
Not interested in paying taxes, not going to buy healthcare, don’t really feel like contributing a damn thing really.
I’m don’t see myself lifting the smallest finger to help this society anymore at this point.
I’ve had all I can stomach.
