A Northwestern University Mexican student group finds eating tacos and drinking tequila to celebrate Cinco de Mayo racially offensive, and wants to see the practice come to an end. In a letter to the universitys paper, the Latin student group Alianza called for a respectful celebration to commemorate the Battles of Puebla, in which a vastly outnumbered, under-equipped Mexican army twice defeated the well-armed, well-trained French army, which had not lost a battle in over fifty years.
This is not unlike a uniquely American holiday, which commemorates the moment when 56 men affixed their signatures upon the Declaration of Independence to mutually pledge to each other [their] lives, [their] fortunes, and [their] sacred honor.
What followed was a bloody 8-year war in which a vastly outnumbered, under-equipped rag-tag group of patriots defeated the well-armed, well-trained [British] army, which had not lost a battle in over fifty years.

They don’t want me to eat tacos, but I want to eat tacos.
Looks like we’ve got a Mexican standoff.
If they were smart, they would do like the Irish do. Instead of worrying about being offended, they should worry about how best to pimp their culture on this holiday and get as much money out of the stupid drunk gringos as possible.
Evanston, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.
Touchy touchy touchy. Why can’t they do something positive, like put on their own Cinco theme party with whatever symbolism they see fit and invite everybody? Surely that brave little bunch of Mexicans who routed the cheese-eaters would consider these complainers to be such pansies.
They don’t have enough sense of humor to do it.
Mexican students should not put up with offensive gringo culture.
They should pack up and go back to Mexico where they will be more in tune with the culture.
Bingo. Though I wouldn’t be upset if all these chest-beating braggadocio holidays disappeared from the American psyche.
I’m offended by the perpetually offended seeking to control others they deem inferior to themselves.
It’s particularly galling when foreigners seek to control the natives of a country that has graciously allowed them to study there, likely even subsidized to do so.
I’m sure there’s someplace in the world, where people don’t drink tequila, eat tacos and wear sombreros on Cinco de Mayo.
I suggest they go there.
The Irish sense of humor and lack of hypersensitivity have served them well in this country.
Ok I’ll try to be outraged and offended by drunken amateurs pretending to be Irish on St Pats.....mmm ...can’t feel it. We real Irish are too cool to be bothered by lesser mortals.
