DUNLAP, Calif. (AP) The investigation into a lion attack that killed a 24-year-old woman who loved big cats is focusing on a cage door that the 550-pound animal managed to escape through to reach the volunteer intern, officials say.
Authorities said Thursday they believe the 5-year-old male lion broke the neck of the woman at a Central California animal park after it got out of its feeding cage and attacked as she cleaned its bigger area.
The investigation is continuing into how the powerful beast and Dianna Hanson came tragically to be in the same place at the same time, Fresno County coroner David Hadden said.
"The lion had been fed, the young woman was cleaning the large enclosure, and the lion was in the small cage. The gate of the cage was partially open, which allowed the lion called Cous Cous to lift it up with his paw," Hadden said, based on a briefing from investigators. "He ran at the young lady."
Hanson was talking with a co-worker on a cellphone in the moments before she was killed, the coroner said. The co-worker became concerned when the conversation ended abruptly and Hanson failed to call back. The co-worker then called authorities when she went to check on Hanson. Hadden said the lion broke Hanson's neck, probably with a swipe of a paw, killing her instantly.
Sheriff's deputies shot Cous Cous after he couldn't be coaxed away from Hanson's body.
Hanson had been working for two months as an intern at Cat Haven, a 100-acre private zoo east of Fresno. Her father, Paul Hanson, described his daughter as a "fearless" lover of big cats and said her goal was to work with the animals at an accredited zoo. She died doing what she loves, he said.

She told her father she was frustrated that Cat Haven did not allow direct contact with animals.
"She was disappointed because she said they wouldn't let her into the cages with the lion and tiger there," said Paul Hanson, a Seattle-area attorney.
The only thing I can think is thank goodness she died pretty quickly via a broken neck. I can’t even imagine being mauled by something that big. For whatever reason, many in our society have put “nice” attributes to wild animals. A lion is not cuddly.. it is a wild animal that will kill you.
I guess people forget that the big cats are way, way much different from the little domestic house cats.
They said on the news that the door to the cage had been left partially open so he was able to get his paw under there and lift it up.
What are the odds that this naive girl did that on purpose hoping that Cous Cous would lift up the door and come in to see her.
Did you ever see the YT vid of the photographer who got out of his family’s car, with wife and baby still inside, to get “better shots” of 3-4 lionesses? They attacked and ate him alive, on camera. It was beyond awful, with his wife and child going apoplectic and another cameraman trying to “shoo” the huge cats away from their kill. I won’t go into details, but after watching it 3x several years ago, I can still close my eyes and visualize it all. His family sued the jungle park for his stupidity; legal outcome unknown to me.
Why was the woman in a cage and why was a lion near the cage to begin with?
Every time I see someone say that I cringe. I'm guessing that her last thoughts were NOT "WOW! It's really great that I'm getting killed by a lion."
“I guess people forget that the big cats are way, way much different from the little domestic house cats.”
The primary difference is SIZE.
Lil’ Fluffums would happily go Full Predator on its doting owner if only it were large enough.
Sounds like human error on her part that led to two avoidable deaths - her own and the lion's.
I’m reminded of the lion scene from “Steelyard Blues”.
Liberal moron. The other White meat...
Even our sweet lovable kitty cats will do from time to time the swating action.
Normally, the big cat would sail away with you in a life boat, and you’d land on an island populated with lots of easy prey for the cat. That’s what the movies taught me.
That’s right. They are called “wild” animals for a reason. I don’t care how cute they look, if there wasn’t a cage between you and them, they will kill you. People get some deadly stupid ideas in their heads about animals sometimes. They don’t think like people. They want to eat people.
PING this one over to you Slings And Arrows. :)=^..^=
“Her father, Paul Hanson, described his daughter as a “fearless” lover of big cats and said her goal was to work with the animals at an accredited zoo. She died doing what she loves, he said.”
Funny, the lion also died doing what he loved best, eating liberal twits that get in his cage.
LOL
LOL
Different only in that they are smaller. If they were as big as a lion they would kill you just for fun.
Really. If a house cat gets moody on you, you will get a nasty scratch. But if you get on the nerves of a big cat you will get agonizingly dismembered and maybe even eaten while still alive. Unfortunately many people-and the majority of the under-40 crowd-are oblivious to such basic practicalities. After all, it’s All About Them.
Absolutely correct. Funnily ironic screen name by the way.
You can bet she was an dirt worshiper.
Pray for America
Did you even attempt to read the article? I mean even the excerpt at the top of the page has the information you seek.
The young woman worked as a volunteer at the big cat haven. She was cleaning the lion's pen as the lion was in a smaller enclosure being fed.
Apparently it was an exercise in wish fulfillment by a narcissistic youth. Unlike most risky behaviors committed by narcissistic youth this one had immediate consequences.
Same thing happened with a tiger here at the San Antonio Zoo - the keeper neglected to completely shut the steel door, cat came in and started “playing” with the keeper. He managed to pull out his pepper spray and let the cat have a big dose, then escaped. My daughter worked with him a few summers ago - he has long, ugly scars all across his scalp and says, “it was completely my fault”.
Scary, but much better outcome than here.
Hmmmm...
Put the 1/4 ton tom cat in his “feeding” cage... I’m sure being in that place evokes a visceral response from his little kitty brain...
Now, go in with your pooper scooper and cell phone... to be his personal poopy-picker-upper... chatting and yapping on your cell phone...
He looks out from his “feeding” cage (thinking of food)... as he hears some chatty yapping... “did you see animal planet last night ?”... it was just like the “lion king”... yeh, I don’t lock his feeding cage. That’s cruel, locking them up. He loves me, he’s always sniffing me, panting and drooling... he’s a sweetie...
LION’s MIND: what’s that two-legged antelope doing in my house... that friggin’ antelope... why can’t it leave my s**t alone... man I’m hungry... I’m always hungry... like Norm always wants a beer... stupid antelope never locks this gate... that’s it, I want some live meat.
But they are just so cute - aren't they?/s
“Why was the woman in a cage and why was a lion near the cage to begin with?”
That question is probably not within the coroner’s purview.
A proper headline: Lion euthanized after escaping cage, killing woman
‘the other white meat’ - you are SO BAD.
I remember Rush saying, years ago, that wild animals wake up in the morning with only two thoughts in their little pea brain: Kill something, and eat it.
Every time I see someone say that I cringe. I'm guessing that her last thoughts were NOT "WOW! It's really great that I'm getting killed by a lion."
Reminds me of the late little Timmy Tredwell doing what he loved to do. ...being bear food.
The only difference between a domesticated cat and a lion/tiger is 400-500 pounds.
I probably shouldn’t write this, but here goes...I think this intern was nutty and believed animals are not really any different than humans. I suspect she herself opened the lion’s cage or at least got closer to it than she had been told she should.
How big a litter box does a 600 pound lion need?
“.. what are the odds that this naive girl...”
It makes me wonder simply because she was “frustrated” (according to the article and her family) that she couldn’t hang out with the big cats. Perhaps she did leave the cage open in hopes of an “accidental” meeting with the animal (thinking it would be loving instead of what it was).
Yes, aren't we glad they aren't big enough to eat us!
“People get some deadly stupid ideas...”
There is a television show (the name escapes me right now... deadly obsession or something similar) and I am amazed at how ignorant/stupid/crazy people are with these type animals. Big cats, bulls, alligators, poisonous snakes.. you name it and there is some person that owns them, calls them “their baby” and treats them like a kittie cat or puppy. Not sure if this is some sort of death wish or just beyond stupid crazy but it exists.
Agreed. Despite the fanatic and fervent belief of some many idiots that animals are just furry humans, they are NOT. (Dog owners come to mind in this regard.) Too many kids actually believe that Bambi is a nature documentary and never outgrow that stupidity.
A lion got her for being and idiot 2x , for wanting to play with lions and for not carrying a gun. At least she died quickly , a rapist might have gotten her and did to her what one did to Hope Melton. 300,000 women get raped per year in the U.S. , 2.5 million home invasions per year in the U.S.A but the liberal news media ignore those stats.
I carry a gun and I'm a southern male but anything be it a bear , lion or thug that comes at me the wrong way gets the lead.
Robert Scott: I am so thrilled to die freezing, starving, and exhausted.
“Thursday, March 29 - Since the 21st we have had a continuous gale from W.S.W. and S.W. We had fuel to make two cups of tea apiece and bare food for two days on the 20th. Every day we have been ready to start for our depot 11 miles away, but outside the door of the tent it remains a scene of whirling drift. I do not think we can hope for any better things now. We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker, of course, and the end cannot be far. It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more.”
IF, he had the strength to write more, I'm sure he would have written how happy he was to die doing what he loved.
Hugo Chavez: Loved being the Dictator of Venezuela. His final last words were : I am so happy to die doing what I love” ........... Ugh, No, His final last words were “ Please don't let me die”. Some hero. What a coward.
As big as he wants?...
I’m sorry for this young lady but this is typical stupidity of “save the animals” liberals. My lib sister in law believes that small town America should be bull dozed and “given back to the animals”.
Yesterday the lion was said to weigh 350 lbs.-—more of an adolescent-—and today the number is 550, closer to the full weight of an adult male lion. Sloppy reporting....
Just guessing here, but I'm guessing that she isn't volunteering HER home to be bulldozed and given back to the animals
“... ever see the YT vid...
I searched for it and found it. OMG! Yes... it is awful. What sort of infuriated me is the fact that this man’s “I am a professional wildlife photographer wanna be” probably scarred his wife, 9 year old and two year old forever. I don’t think any amount of therapy would help those children especially. Did you see the last photographs? It was a lioness showing her teeth just before he got jumped. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
“... lib sister in law believes that small town America should be full dozed..”
Maybe you should suggest that she volunteer at one of the big cat sanctuaries. Okay.. that was mean. I am in a mean feeling day. LOL!
Not so different.
We think house cats are nice only because we are so much bigger than they are...
THE MANEATERS OF TSAVO and THE MANEATERS OF KUMAON should be required reading for these people.
Maybe a read of DEATH IN THE LONG GRASS and other books by PETER H CAPSTICK. If you get through the first paragraph you will be hooked and can’t put it down.
