The Brown Student Health Insurance Plan will cover 14 different sexual reassignment surgery procedures starting in August, Director of Insurance and Purchasing Services Jeanne Hebert confirmed in an email to The Herald.
The move makes Brown one of a handful of schools and healthcare providers nationwide to cover the surgeries.
We identified this as an important benefit for students to have access to, Hebert wrote, adding that the change was in line with Browns efforts to support all students. The coverage will be funded through renewal rates paid for next years student healthcare coverage, she wrote. In general, the total package of sexual reassignment surgeries, hormone therapy and other services can cost up to $50,000.
Kelly Garrett, LGBTQ Center coordinator, said she has strongly advocated this change for the past several years. A milestone in the movement to add coverage for these surgeries was the inclusion of hormone treatment in the current school years coverage plan, Garrett added. The sexual reassignment procedures that will be covered are very standard and very comprehensive, she said.
In the past, transgender students did not have access to sex reassignment surgeries at Brown and often were barred from treatment due to high costs, Garrett said. I know people where its taken them 10 years because they needed to save money, she said. The LGBTQ Center has no statistics on how many transgender students are at Brown, and it is difficult to get accurate data due to self-reporting and the nature of some students gender identity changes during their time in college, she said.

but, but, but......whole.
Can anyone enroll there? I really, really need a tummy tuck.
Just when I am sure nothing will shock me any more...
You nailed it. Genital mutilation and a lifetime of steroids is now called sex reassignment. Civilization, where are you?
You’re actually onto something...call it unintended consequences, but you can expect in a few years for Brown to end up with a passel of transgendered students looking for a free ride for their big medical bills..
You’re not kidding. If you want to get depressed, check out the article’s comment section. This isn’t just some obstinate administrator implementing an idiotic proposal over the objections of a majority. The freaks at that school actually seem to approve of the decision.
you cannot take a man and turn him into a woman...nor can you take a woman and turn her into a man.
what you have is a Martian at best and a mutilated victim at worst(like we need more ‘victims’).
need proof? just check out that stud muffin, Chaz Bono.(I decided, thankfully, against a photo.)
"Reassignment" is mutilation, and it is evil when done to anyone...I agree! If enough people pray, however, the tide will turn: Rosary for Peace.
Everyone must pay higher rates for what a vanishingly small minority of students want. Raise your hand if you think that’s fair.
Let all the other students pay
To make my penis go away;
I can’t afford it, never will:
*My* student body. *Your* higher bill.
Chopping and grafting can not change a person’s sex (not gender)
This is mutilation. People who favor it are mentally disturbed.
The Liberal students won’t mind being charged more in their health insurance premiums to provide “reassignment” surgeries to the mentally ill among them. If they run out of money, they can always get another student loan from Obama’s stash.
Imagine the confusion in the military when some of these carnie side-show freaks show up sporting 2nd. Lt. bars.
There’s a “moral hazard” here, as the insurance industry would say: which university is now going to be the first choice for students who want to change sex?
The dorms are going to be a blast.
Precisely. As soon as people calculate that a semester at Brown (part-time?)costs less than their surgery there will be hundreds of new transgender students.
Under the circumstances, don't blame Brown University for having insurance covering it. The problem is far deeper than one liberal college and their health coverage.
Many of us who have major medical group coverage are implicitly covered for "sex reassignment" if a physician deems it medically necessary.
under what circumstances would it be “medically” necessary??
This puts a new spin on the
“What can Brown do for you”
Please note this is not my opinion, but they claim that if a person is "gender dysphoric" (hates being thier own gender) to the point of being suicidal, then the preferred treatment is, etc.
