When Kimberly Common visited her mother in the hospital Monday, the two spoke of how much they missed Common's son, Antonio, who was slain 15 months ago at the age of 23.
By Tuesday afternoon, the family's tragedy deepened as Common's older son, Devin, 27, was fatally shot near their home in the Park Manor neighborhood a little past noon. As she stood on a sidewalk by her son's sheet-covered body, Common recalled his last words to her: "I'll be back. I'm going to the store."
"That's the same thing" Antonio said before he was killed in October 2011, the mother of two other children said as tears streamed down her face.
A little more than two hours later, a 15-year-old girl had also been shot to death, bringing to 42 the number of homicides so far in 2013, making this month the most violent January in Chicago since 2002

"The American people deserve the truth. I don't talk a lot about this because, and let me be clear, virtually all of these victims are black."
And on the news today they said St. Louis has a higher homicide rate than Chicago.
And virtually all of the offenders are black, too Barky. So what should we do about that? I got some suggestions but they’re not sufficiently PC.
Ah, yes, the city where the mayor has asked the gangbangers to restrict thir shooting each other to vacant alleys.
If black and latino homicide rates were on par with the rest of the population, we’d likely not be having all this gun control discussion.
If 0 bummer had sons......
Take all their illegal guns away and they will still “slay” each other with baseball bats, boards, knives, bricks and what ever else these animals can grab. All this in Chicago the city with strick gun control laws. Seems they need to control the gangs and “bangers” instead of the guns because “where there is a will, there is a way”..
Nah we’ve heard about “gangland slayings” for fifty years. I think the word connotes an extra degree of recklessness and viciousness.
Perhaps a simple solution like “death” to those who use a gun in a crime (murder, etc.) Give them the “Timothy McVey” treatment, no lengthy trial, no appeals lasting for years, no jail time, just plain old DEATH without appeal.
That might, might slow them down from killing each other a bit.
“The Chicago Way”
Why the heck do these folks live in Chicago? I never go there, and my heart is in my throat whenever I have to drive through. One of the scariest times of my life was when the freeway pushed us off at 3 AM at the Gary, Indiana border and we had to drive through on surface streets.
In the “old” days.....Fathers did that...
But one reason for that, McCarthy said, was New York's tougher penalties for gun offenses. "... When people get caught with (illegal) guns in New York, they go to jail," he said. " As a result they're not carrying guns with impunity." (My emphasis)
And, why, perchance, aren't the bangers who're caught illegally packing heat sent away for longer? Many of them are felons in possession and are using the guns in the drug trade, all Federal felonies. Indeed, carrying concealed in IL is a felony all by itself. Nevertheless, the Trayvons and Leshauns, all Obama's spiritual sons, keep on packing in spite of being caught.
Methinks it has a wee bit to do with Chicago black culture. The politicians and preachers, like Rev. Wright, are in the gangs' pockets and have always been. They'd be promptly booted out of office if they initiated a real stop and frisk program directed at high homicide areas and followed it up by sending the perps away for as long as current law will allow.
Until they do that, all their wailing about gun crime is nothing but BS and propaganda clearly designed to disarm law abiding people, giving the gangs huge free fire zones.
