Hundreds of thousands of people in New York City, Long Island and New Jersey may not have power restored for up to 10 more days, officials warned Thursday. Meanwhile, weather forecasters said a winter storm could hit the Northeast next week.
In New York City, the utility ConEd said the 228,000 customers in Manhattan still without power should have it back by Saturday, but that would leave more than 400,000 elsewhere potentially in the dark beyond Saturday.
In a statement Thursday, ConEd said it hoped the vast majority of those would have power by Nov. 11.
The areas taking the longest, spokeswoman Sara Banda told NBCNews.com, are those with overhead lines. "It's taking a bit longer," she said, noting that crews have had to deal with 100,000 downed lines.
As for the potential for a new storm, Banda said ConEd has a team dealing with weather scenarios. "We're going to have to take that into account," she said.
ConEd also noted that many buildings in areas with restored service will continue to be without power until they repair any flood damage to their own electrical systems.

I was starting to suffer from cabin fever. It definitely wasn’t a pleasant few days.
Some low temps in NJ next 4 days, 35, 32, 30, and 25... Been saying this for 2 days...we, the region, were totally unprepared for an outage greater than 48 hours...never occurred to them...Monday morning, this will get ugly and all bets are off on Tues...we have power and 2 full tanks of gas, but the vast majority are riding around on fumes or sitting in 2 hour lines for gas...80% of stations are closed and the next stories will be the elderly freezing, followed by food shortages..really hope they get this fixed soon and there is no long term impact, but it has the potential to get bad in a hurry...Barry now owns this and after our governor gets off his knees(and i am usually a fan), he’s going to be owning this too...and don’t think that Booker, Sweeney or Codey or whoever the Dems put up, will not be beating him over the head with this next year at election time....

Get some of those outside garden SOLAR LIGHTS, bring them in at night. PRESTO LIGHT.
Good for camping as well, and I plan on using that when our storms come.

The Insta Bulbs they sell on the TV infomercials are also good to have. They are battery powered (keep fresh AA batteries on hand) and can be moved from room to room or placed in their holders to make them stationary light sources. Though they don’t give as much light as regular light bulbs, they are safer than lanterns or candles.
Thanks for that tip. I have some solar garden lights I’m not currently using and probably wouldn’t have thought of them.
Batteries are costly, and just don't last. When we are in our cellar, we have to have the flashlights, we use a battery operated FAN, portable TV, Radio, lots of batteries. Then I have to make sure I take the batteries out and store them, and hope they work the next time I need them. lol
So I will be getting some of those garden variety Solar Lights now.
Wow, 22 days is a darn long time. Worst we had was 14 days with Hurricane Gloria in 1985 (also *just* a Cat 1). That one took us three days to cut all the trees out of the way to get to the road. After that we could get drinking water at a local state forest that had an old well with a hand-pump. We had our grandpa living with us, and had to deal with his Alzheimer’s during that storm. Eye-opening experience for me as a 15 year-old.
I’ve never taken storm warnings for granted since.
Very good tip. I have those out front, I’ll have to remember that when I lose power this winter (which always happens). I also have some power sensing flashlights inside. They plug in to outlets, serve as night lights in regular days, and when the power goes out, they come on full power. Immediately helpful when the power goes out at night, and are basically rechargeable flashlights.
Oh, goodness. I am glad you have a car and gas to get out if you need to. Those poor people who are stuck.
The government does not do the emergency aid on the gulf coast well. People who are not in the mess, do it. Get some buddies organized and take some canned food, water and dry clothing to the bad areas if you can. Every little bit helps. That is what we do here.
We don’t wait for the government! Chruches, businesses and individuals get busy. They save lives.
Neither New York nor New Jersey have early (in-person) voting.
If things go well for Romney on Tuesday night, he can just concede NY and NJ, two states he's not going to win anyway, to Obama and then get on with the transition to POTUS.
