Hurricane Sandy From Space

NASA

Just in case you thought the Hurricane hype couldn't get any louder, check out this dispatch from Weather Channel meterologist Stu Ostro:

- History is being written as an extreme weather event continues to unfold, one which will occupy a place in the annals of weather history as one of the most extraordinary to have affected the United States.

- REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE OFFICIAL DESIGNATION IS NOW OR AT/AFTER LANDFALL -- HURRICANE (INCLUDING IF "ONLY" A CATEGORY ONE), TROPICAL STORM, POST-TROPICAL, EXTRATROPICAL, WHATEVER -- OR WHAT TYPE OF WARNINGS ARE ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER -- PEOPLE IN THE PATH OF THIS STORM NEED TO HEED THE THREAT IT POSES WITH UTMOST URGENCY...

- With Sandy having already brought severe impacts to the Caribbean Islands and a portion of the Bahamas, and severe erosion to some beaches on the east coast of Florida, it is now poised to strike the northeast United States with a combination of track, size, structure and strength that is unprecedented in the known historical record there...

- A meteorologically mind-boggling combination of ingredients is coming together:

Over in NYC the official word is the surge at The Battery will be the highest in history ~ and their history goes back to 1620 give or take a few.

Takes a special storm to do that.

Locally (CT), they are predicting 4 high tides before the storm surge is over.

Wow. Folks in FL do not even have a modern point of reference for that sort of event. Soaked soil, salt damaged crops and vegetation are going to be a problem. May the good Lord protect those of you in the path of thing.

I’m thinking it could go either way:

a) Rain and inconvenience might help repubs

b) Large storm impacts could drum up Global Warming Hate Speech against the repubs and thus favor democraps.

Recall Romney is for Oil, Coal and Nuclear.

Why do you think it’s not in Obama’s favor?

Look as though the wind is blowing the water right up the Delaware River.

Wow. I sure hope the predictions are wrong, but I ain’t taking chances.

They are also talking that the CT river will surge (backwards) up to Middletown, roughly 25 miles of a pretty wide river.

20 to 40 mph winds with 65 mph gusts ~ probably won't do that in the morning but it will be doing that on the way home. Here's what that looks like >http://woodbridge.patch.com/articles/what-does-a-storm-with-60-70-mph-gusts-look-like#youtube_video-7499571 It will be doing that for hours.

It is the storm surge. Ft. Lauderdale is under local flood watch tonight. Epic surf at Port Everglades (Commercial stunk) and Miami had a epic pipeline waves as per my surfer nephew.

Coastal people have to watch out.....it's the storm surge that will pose the most danger.

Does space make me look fat?

The only valid response to that question for a male is to hit speed dial to his lawyer and say: "Michael, I need to set up an appointment". ;)

Thank you! I really hope and pray the hype doesn’t come close to reality.

Yeah, and they also have the worthless Al Roker.

'Wake Up With Al'...eeeeeew. I don't think so.

CLN ('Chicken Little Network', formerly known as The Weather Channel'), is almost embarrassing to watch. I feel sorry for people who have been subjected to these levels of hysteria AND pink NFL games in the same day. Wither America?

agreed, here down south we know about storms but to listen to my MIL who is up in MA then one would think this was Andrew and Katrina all rolled in one.

People buying loads of food, stocking up with various items and the media will use this to cover on Libya and this cover up.

I remember that ice storm — MAN was that a cold winter! Little Neck Bay froze solid from Douglaston (where I lived) all the way out past the Kings Point lighthouse. (That’s as far as we could see from the seawall at the point — it could have been frozen much further.)

Some nutty friend of mine rode his bike from the Douglaston Dock, past Stepping Stones in Great Neck, and around the Kings Point lighthouse. He told us that as he rounded the lighthouse, The Merchant Marine Academy middies were on the dock screaming at him to come off the ice, but he just calmly rode back all the way home. EPIC!

One more thing about that ice storm, though: It made my tree-laden neighborhood absolutely gorgeous. It was a like a winter fairyland, and the sledding was top notch!

Regards,

For all of you pooh poohers! In New England we are feeling the effects already,
I believe this sucker is still some 500 miles away.

I get the whole “hyped up” overreaction response.

My inland neighborhood was without power for 10 days last year with Irene.. wasn’t so cold then.

Our power lines are on phone poles which get whacked by falling trees etc.

You can get snarky after you live through it.

There was some black guy who’s either a anchorman or weather man on CNN had some book on his desk while the camera was showing him and his desk and the book next to his PC monitor that said “ Leadership “ ..... what’s up with that ?

Sorry we aren’t buying all this hyperbole. Some of have lived through category 4 or category 5 storms. So this aint nothing.

I'll have you know Irene knocked over some of my corn last year. It took the better part of an hour to straighten it out...

Right, so that means high tide and WEREWOLVES - be sure you have silver bullets for the werewolves, OK?

Agreed,

All kidding aside (my last post),I think the flooding along the Delaware will be devastating. I am praying it won’t be, but the pilot and amateur wx man in me is uneasy about this.

When I knocked a salt box down to build my shore house in Beach Haven NJ, I found some old pictures of a Hurricane in the mid sixties.... Homes floated away in that one.

This will be just as bad.

The Weather Channel goofballs are all greenie Global Warmers in my opinion, but I don’t this this is overhyped.

Prayers for all in this storms path.

Those are still shot just illustrating what where the cameras are. Click the links, e.g., “Coney Island,” for the live shot. Still cool, but one disadvantage is you don’t have the livecams from all the different parts of NYC on the same page.
