MANILA (AFP) - China told its citizens Thursday they were not safe in the Philippines and its state media warned of war, as a month-long row over rival claims in the South China Sea threatened to spill out of control.

Chinese travel agencies announced they had suspended tours to the Philippines, under government orders, and the embassy in Manila advised its nationals already in the country to stay indoors ahead of planned protests.

We have an office in Clark AB which has been converted into an economic free zone. Been there countless times. Half of the huge base (took us an entire day to navigate through the empty buildings) but the infrastructure is still there.

Yes, but they’re busy spraying crops right now.

Guess they wish now that they didn’t kick us out of Subic Bay.

Thought they had learned their lesson when a Volcano destroyed Clark Field. :)

I flew out of there in June of 1965, they threw us out shortly thereafter.

I don’t know why we stillhave troops in Europe or Japan and I know we already got booted from the Philippines. But I think we should still help South Korea as much as they need to counter North Korea. (not as many troops as we have there of course)

Hey China! Vietnam has been saying that you couldn’t beat a drum! They say that you’re all mouth and no muscle! They’re claiming they kicked your behinds back home the last time you messed with them! Are you going to let them get away with that kind of talk?

I don’t get your point. The Rhineland was Germany’s own territory. China and the Phillipines are two entirely different countries.

So, let China freely go on a reign of terror and expansionism in Southeast Asia and just look the other way? That’s a real “stick your head in the sand” read on world history. Seems you forgot all about Pearl Harbor for one thing, not to mention the Cold War.

I don’t care if they wanted our troops there in the past or not. They’re not people who ever attacked us, they’re a democratic, capitalist, Christian, English-speaking nation and they are a longtime diplomatic and economic ally. The idea that the U.S. would stand by and let them get swallowed up by a dictatorial communist tyranny is absolutely appalling, indecent and immoral. If anything this is an opportunity we should take to reestablish a broader military partnership.

Not to mention it would only lay the ground for China to continue a reign of terror and gobble up resources and land just like Japan leading up to WW2. It would be the height of ignorance to believe that is in our best interests. First they came for the Filipinos, and I said nothing....

China’s ambitions do not stop at the Philippines. Read up on China’s 2nd and 3rd Island Chains. Guam and Hawai’i are included.

China does love its children. In little easy-to-swallow pill form.

The real danger here is that once China begins military aggression against the PI, a non-response from the US will only lead to more China aggression--it won't end in the PI. Once it starts, WE WILL be drawn into a hot conflict with the chicoms.

Hard to understand why some people just don't get it. History repeating itself...

I was stationed at Clark Air Base 1961-62. The ground floor of my flight’s barracks was taken up by a Philippine Air Force mess hall. As much as I like Filipinos and the Philippines in general, there were some incredible smells that wafted up from that chow hall to our squad bays.

"China does love its children. In little easy-to-swallow pill form."

Okay. Still, China depends on us to buy their products for their GDP. Plus, they know we have Tridents and Los Angeles attack subs patrolling the seas. As wimpy as obambi is, the Chi-coms would not attack us.

Also, since they inherited Hong Kong, they have learned how successful capitalism is and how it increases their leadership power. This is from a guy who stood in opposition to the Chi-coms taking over the now defunct Naval Base in Long Beach. I have a long history with the Chi-coms, and I see them moderating.

That said, if they attack the Philippines as they bluster in recent days over some shoal, I think it all to be gamemanship due to Bambi's weakness. The wimp will stand down or whine to the UN and/or send Hillary to "negotiate".

I really don't care about some island/shoals dispute that China is talking about and I don't want one single American Marine, soldier, sailor, or airmen to defend some crap reef. Let them deal with that without our blood. I doubt China wants to go international warfare over such.

Plus, the PI kick us out. Let them defend themselves now. If they lose and China takes them over, so what? Why should we sacrifice our children? They are a third-world nation even after all the years of American dollars and support. Screw them. I am confident of our submariners on the Tridents to keep China from going further.

The real threat to our nation is Iran, and to a lessor extent, the Norks. They are the crazies...

"Does the Philippines even have an air force?"

Not since they kicked us out of Clark Air Base.

To quote a great philosopher, "Stupid is as stupid does".

Bet they want us hanging around now that China is threatening them.

I say NO MORE AMERICAN DEATHS, LIMBS, OR BLOOD for ungrateful peoples. Let China have them. Hell, let China have the region. However, let China know that if they go outside the region, our Tridents await.

"So, let China freely go on a reign of terror and expansionism in Southeast Asia and just look the other way?"

Okay. I'll look at it from your POV. China wants to kill their world high GDP that keeps their leadership in power, but yet is willing to risk that for some "expansionism" ideal for some shoals/reefs?

"That’s a real “stick your head in the sand” read on world history. Seems you forgot all about Pearl Harbor for one thing, not to mention the Cold War."

Don't you dare lecture me about Pearl nor the Cold War. I am 11 years Aviation Navy Veteran while being chased by Soviet air, surface and sub-surface craft. I don't for a second think I did as much as grunts on the ground have done in the past or currently, but I did know the threat of the Soviet machine looking to send me to the bottom of the sea.

"I don’t care if they wanted our troops there in the past or not. If anything this is an opportunity we should take to reestablish a broader military partnership."

I don't give one sh*t about their religion nor their past support. They were stupid enough to kick us out, so I say - so be it. Let them deal with China.

If China attacks, the PI is going to want our blood and treasure. Yes, we have a treaty with them, but I'm starting to wonder about such treaties, since many countries have not honored them.

If China were to attack the PI, tell me Sir, how many of our youth do we need to come back with lost limbs (not to mention DEAD) to protect some ungrateful ally, once again? How many? 100? 1000? 10,000? You're very quick to go to war over a questionable ally. You really want to fight China?

"Not to mention it would only lay the ground for China to continue a reign of terror and gobble up resources and land just like Japan leading up to WW2. It would be the height of ignorance to believe that is in our best interests. First they came for the Filipinos, and I said nothing...."

Can you live anymore in the past? Sheesh, China is not going to gobble up anything in this day, other than maybe some reef. You really don't get economics, do you? They now like their capitalism and it's growing every day.

Do you know how many of their companies are listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)? They may fight the Philippines over some shoals, but your extrapolation is to the extreme. Get a new world view, and no, I don't mean socialist or communists ideologies, but economic realities.

Bottom line: China does not want to mess with the US due to us owing so much debt to them. Have any idea how bad it would be for China if the US defaulted on them?

This is not the 1940's - think Tridents. Why should you or me or my wife or your wife or my children or your children give a shit about the Philippines? Other than treaties, I see NO advantage in supporting them. Yes, they are mostly good people, as are many around the world, but where do we draw the line?

How many nations do we need to send our children to die for? Yes, I agreed with killing the Taliban in Aftganiscrap and even Iraq initially. You want to watch more body boxes come home over some stupid shoals?
