While "Mitt" and "Newt" were wresting in the mud (and lest there be any doubt, I favored Newt in that match) Presidential candidate Rick Santorum went home to care for his beautiful daughter Bella. She had been hospitalized and was in a critical condition. The very act of his leaving the campaign when the pundit class was interpreting his exit as a sign of his demise, reveals the character of this good man. It speaks loudly as to why he should be seriously reconsidered in this hotly contested Republican primary. This race is far from over.

By the way, had Santorum left the race, Newt STILL would have lost by 2 points so I don’t know what the big deal is. Not one state has Santorum taken a vote from Newt.

I agree, he has my vote since I have no other horse in this race. The numbers are not good....

Santorum should have stayed home with Bella and the rest of his family.
Why would he put politics over his daughter’s/family’s needs? I sure wouldn’t.

So this is what it has come to? Newt loses one primary and we are supposed to throw him under the bus in favor of the guy Newt outpolled by 20%.

Get real!

And don’t forget Santorum backer Arlen Spector over Pat Toomey. Rick liked all the big government programs and pending of the Bush era. Rick was part of the country club establishment. That’s why he was slaughtered in 2006.

Newt fought the establishment when he was in congress and balanced the budget.

I’ll stick with Newt.

IF Willard gets the nomination, he’ll go to Rick for VP in a feeble attempt to woo the conservative base...

It ain’t gonna play with me.

No Mitt, sherlock. No Mitt. Not now. Not ever.

If Rick Santorum poses a threat he will also be “carpet bombed” Newt is going to be the only one who can stop Romney.

Why is it so hard to ask someone who is a conservative be the nominee? Santorum isn’t perfect, but at least he’s a conservative.

Nope, no little Ricky for me. My first presidential election I settled for Nixon in 68, then again in 72. Wore a gasmask for the Watergate mess and settled for Ford in 76 then relished my choice in RR for 80 and 84. Then had to go back to the dregs with Bush in 88 and of course we know what happened in 92. And 96........gawd how stupid is the GOP?

Then along came the great pretender from Texas in 00 and 04, promising to be a compasionate conservative. Well we now know how that turned out and then the GOP tried to cram McStupid down our throats in 08. I don’t know which was worse, Dole or McInsane.

So no, I will not go along to get along with what the GOP says is best for me and my country. Don’t know whom I shall vote for but it will not be Obammy nor Mitty.

I love the way Santorum cares for his family, however he has started the same negative ads against Gingrich as Romney.
I will no longer consider him.
When the primary gets to California I will vote for Gingrich.

We had a "character president" already. Man, did that work out great. His name was Jimmuh "Ah'll nevuh lah tuh yew" Carter.

This article is obscene.

Not so minor point ... Santorum went home TO DO HIS TAXES. He just happened to be around when Bella was hospitalized. It speaks nothing about his character.

The race may be far from over, but I will not be supporting Ricky unless and until he becomes the only thing standing between Obama and the oval office.

I voted for Santorum today and it was the first time since I voted for Reagan that I felt good about my vote.

Conservatives need to finally make a stand and stand with a candidate of this character caliber.

I would love to see Obama faced with defending his record and not handing him a punching bag he can spend $1 billion deflecting through negative ads.

Perpetuating the fantasy of Ross Santorum will only drag us further into the weeds.

Santorum and his vulture groupies can go f@ck off.

Like I said, they are just rooting for Romney from the sides in some pathetic effort to justify him still being in the race.

Sorry, but if Bella were my daughter, I wouldn’t be wasting this precious critical time with her by running for president. I’d be home enjoying every minute.

I don’t want to hear a single sanctimonious thing from any Santorum supporter tonight. Rick has thin skin and no one’s attacked him yet. How do you think he would act, and how do you think his poll numbers would hold up, if his big government liberalism was exposed with 99% of Mitt’s ad expenditures. That’s right, 99% of Mitt’s ads were aimed at Newt.

You think Rickie boy continues to play nice if he starts getting attacked? Yeah, right.

The Reagan/Ford contest was no polite tea party. Who’s kidding whom?

The unfortunate lesson of the 2012 GOP primary season will be as old as the hills: money talks. Millions of dollars of negative advertising in IA, then many millions more in FL that cannot be matched won the votes there.

Santorum’s polling showed it wasn’t worth the $$$ for Romney to spend on him. He focused exclusively on Newt. Had Santorum built on his IA showing, he’d have been the target of millions in negative ads, and had funding to run his own ads. THEN we’d have seen his character under fire. As it is, he stayed above the fray only because he wasn’t a viable candidate in this contest.

You think no one else in the race would have a "Hollywood Stop"-style "campaign suspension" for their hospitalized child?

Especially someone far out of the running who had abandoned the state?

As the saying goes, I was born at night but not last night.

This primary has become the theater of the absurd.
