Stealth Islamist Charter Schools Under Investigation
Front Page Magazine ^ | November 1, 2012 | Arnold Ahlert

The charter school movement associated with Turkish Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen is under federal investigation

If one believes that the battle for the nation’s soul is occurring, not just in Washington, D.C., but in schools across the nation, the steady advance of Turkish-Gulen Charter Schools may be cause for alarm. Fethullah Gulen is a Turkish Islamic cleric who fled his native country in 1998, after being charged with seeking to overthrow the secular Turkish government. He currently lives in exile at a 28-acre mountain complex in the Pocono Mountains, with more than $25 billion of assets at his command. The 135 charter schools associated with the Gulen Movement (GM) enroll more than 45,000 students and comprise the largest charter school network in the United States — all of which are fully funded by American taxpayers. Fethullah Gulen has been under investigation by the government since 2011.

That investigation, carried out by FBI and the Departments of Labor and Education, is centered around charter school employees who are allegedly engaged in kicking back part of their salaries to the Muslim movement also known as Hizmet (service to others), founded by Gulen. Gulen initiated his movement in Izmir, a city on Turkey’s Aegean coast, more than 40 years ago, preaching impassioned sermons to his followers, who may now number as many as six million. In Turkey, the Gulen Movement has been accused of pushing for a hardline Islamic state. Despite this reality, government officials investigating the kickback scheme are apparently satisfied that there is no religious agenda being disseminated in America. Their investigation is centered around the hundreds of Turkish teachers, administrators, and other staffers employed under the H1B visa program, who may or may not be misusing taxpayer money.

This would appear to be a stunningly naive approach to the issue. H1B visas allow US employers to hire foreign workers in specialty occupations on a temporary basis. “Specialty occupations” are defined as “requiring theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge in a field of human endeavor.” Gulen schools are among the nation’s largest users of the H1B visas. In 2009, they received government approvals for 684 visas. The Harmony School, a Gulen-related institution, has applied for more H1B visas than any educational institution in the country.

GM officials at some of the charter schools that ostensibly specialize in math and science, claim they need to fill teaching spots with Turkish teachers. At the Young Scholars of Central Pennsylvania Charter School in State College, Ruth Hocker, former president of the parents’ group, grew suspicious when certified American teachers began to be replaced by uncertified Turks with limited English-speaking skills who, despite that limitation, commanded higher salaries. Parents pointed out that these uncertified teachers were moved from one charter to another when their “emergency” credentials expired. They also spoke about a pattern of sudden turnovers of Turkish business managers, administrators, and board members.

Similar complaints arose in Texas, where it was revealed that hundreds of Turkish teachers and administrators were also working with H1B visas. In addition, the Harmony School group was using taxpayer money to fund Gulen’s movement via school construction and renovation projects. Despite assertions that the bidding process on those projects was fair, records showed that virtually all of the work has been done by Turkish-owned contractors, according to the New York Times.

A former teacher from Turkey revealed an ominous development, reportedly telling the FBI that the Gulen Movement had divided the United States into five regions, with a general manager in each who coordinates the activities of the schools, and related foundations and cultural centers.

All of the above raises the obvious question: if these schools are traditional American charter schools that do nothing more than “follow the state curriculum,” as Tansu Cidav, the acting CEO of the Truebright Science Academy in North Philadelphia contends, why is it necessary to hire foreign teachers and coordinate activities nationwide?

A federal document released in 2011 may provide the answer. It posits that Gulen’s charter schools may in fact be madrassahs, where students are “brain-washed” to serve as proponents of the New Islamic World Order Gulen purportedly seeks to create.

Former Muslim Brotherhood member Walid Shoebat illuminates the bigger picture. Shoebat, who was highly critical of a CBS “60 Minutes” report on Gulen (who refused to be interviewed for the piece), likens the cleric’s movement to the leftist Center for American Progress (CAP) And radical billionaire George Soros. “Both men are extremely wealthy, use that money to surreptitiously spread their ideologies, and like to operate behind the scenes as much as possible,” writes Shoebat.

The American Thinker’s Janet Levy takes it one step further. After noting that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan belongs to the AKP political party founded by Gulen upon his arrival in Pennsylvania, she points out that “Turkey is reverting to its historical Ottoman Empire-inspired Islamic fundamentalism,” even as “it is pursuing a stealth or cultural jihad against the West, in large part through the efforts of Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish Islamic theologian.” In a 1999 video, Gulen himself spoke of a surreptitious plan for taking over the Turkish government: ”You must move in the arteries of the system without anyone noticing your existence until you reach all the power centers … until the conditions are ripe … The time is not yet right. You must wait for the time when you are complete and conditions are ripe, until we can shoulder the entire world and carry it[.]”

The movement is well on its way towards achieving that aim. GM is now active in 140 countries. Aside from its charter school empire, other interests including boarding schools, universities, banks, media companies, newspapers, charities, and think tanks.

60 Minutes reporter Leslie Stahl took the typically leftist, see-no-Islamist-evil approach towards complaints about the Gulen schools advancing an Islamic agenda in America, assuring viewers that he promotes “tolerance, inter-faith dialogue and, above all, he promotes education.” Yet even Stahl was forced to acknowledge that while Gulen “invites conspiracy theories that he’s running Turkey from the Poconos and is bent on global Muslim domination,” his movement “does lack transparency: its funding, hierarchy, and ambitions remain hidden–leading our State Department to wonder in cables between Ankara and Washington if Gulen has an ‘insidious political agenda.’”

This is not the first investigation conducted of Gulen’s empire. In 2008, members of the Netherlands’ Christian Democrat, Labor, and Conservative parties agreed to cut several million euros in government funding for organizations affiliated with Gulen. An investigation ensued when Erik Jan Zürcher, director of the Amsterdam-based International Institute for Social History, along with five former followers who had worked for Gulen, told Dutch television that the Gulen community was moving step-by-step to topple the secular order.

In Pennsylvania, neighbors of Gulen’s fortress retreat complain of hearing automatic gunfire and the drone of a surveillance helicopter that constantly searches for intruders. 100 Turkish guards stand watch over the property as well. If this man and his movement–which continues to expand–have nothing to hide, they have a remarkable way of showing it.

As a Turkish observer speaking to the New Republic noted, “No society would tolerate this big of an organization being this untransparent.” The FBI’s new investigation against Gulen’s organization brings us one step closer to exposing what goes on behind the closed doors of Gulen’s empire.

Obama Administration’s Lead #Benghazi Investigator Slams America and Islamophobes #StandDown
The Jawa Report ^ | 11/2/12

Thanks Bronco Bamma! And Hillary, you must make Bill[wink wink remember 1998 Kenya/Tunisia?] and your mentor, Madeline Albright[1998 Albright also ignored pleas for more securityfrom US Ambassador to Kenya Ms Bushnell (h/t Anna)], proud with your determination to get to the bottom of this f’n screwup

America is a seething hotbed of “Islamophobia,” filled with ignorant racist rubes who irrationally fear the benign Muslim religion, according to the Obama administration’s lead investigator into the Benghazi atrocities.

So said former Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering in more polished, diplomatic language during an Oct. 23 panel discussion at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The talk was on “what role the faith community can play in fighting Islamophobia,” a make-believe mental illness that Islamists would love to have listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Radical Islam’s stateside defenders frequently accuse anti-terrorism hawks of “McCarthyism,” hurling the epithet “Islamophobe” the same way American leftists use the word “racist” to shut down debate.

Pickering’s pontifications came two and a half weeks after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton named him to head a State Department “Accountability Review Board” tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths on Sept. 11, 2012, the 11th anniversary of 9/11, of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, information management officer Sean Smith, and security personnel Glen Doherty, and Tyrone Woods at the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya.

*Insert long expletive here*

Update: Here’s some more nuggets from Diana West: Pickerings Red Flags

Pickering is one of those Washington insiders whose public record is less a matter of what he’s done than what he’s been: U.S. ambassador to Russia, Israel, El Salvador, Jordan, India, Nigeria and the United Nations. What such postings may obscure, however, is that the man is a foreign policy establishment leftist. It’s not just that Pickering serves as chairman of the board of trustees of the International Crisis Group, a George Soros group that, for example, advocated engagement with the Shariah-supremacist Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Pickering has personally explored opening relations with Hamas; pushed peace talks with the Taliban; argued for getting rid of, or removing to the U.S., all tactical nuclear weapons in Europe (and moving Russia’s to east of the Urals); and promoted bilateral talks with Iran without preconditions. And speaking of Iran, Pickering sits on the boards of two pro-Tehran groups, the American Iranian Council and the National Iranian American Council. The Iranian connections are additionally disturbing since one Benghazi scenario to be explored is whether Iran was involved, possibly in retribution for U.S. support of anti-Assad forces (including jihadists) in Syria.[More...]

Adel-Radi-Saker-al-Wahabi-al-Harbi.jpg

Adel Radi Saker al Wahabi al Harbi, Muhsin al Fadhli's deputy.

The US Treasury Department announced today that it has designated Adel Radi Saqr al Wahabi al Harbi, who is "a key member of an al Qaeda network operating in Iran and led by Iran-based al Qaeda facilitator Muhsin al Fadhli." This same network was previously headed by another al Qaeda operative, Yasin al Suri, but al Fadhli took over as chief of al Qaeda's Iran-based network in late 2011.

Al Harbi serves as al Fadhli's deputy. In that capacity, according to Treasury, al Harbi "facilitates the travel of extremists to Afghanistan or Iraq via Iran on behalf of al Qaeda, and is believed to have sought funds to support al Qaeda attacks."

Al Harbi joined al Qaeda's network in Iran in 2011, but was previously added to Saudi Arabia's Most Wanted List. The Saudi Ministry of Interior charged al Harbi with "traveling to Afghanistan to join al Qaeda and providing technical support on the Internet to the terrorist group."

Muhsin al Fadhli, who is said to be al Qaeda's new leader inside Iran.

Yasin al Suri and five other al Qaeda members tied to the Iran-based network were designated by the US Treasury Department in July 2011. In December 2011, the US government offered a $10 million reward for information leading to al Suri's capture. It is one of the highest bounties offered for any terrorist.

In February 2012, the Treasury Dept. designated Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) for its support of al Qaeda and al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). Then, in July 2012, the US State Department highlighted the relationship between Iran and al Qaeda in its annual Country Reports on Terrorism publication.

"Today's action, which builds on our action from July 2011, further exposes al Qaeda's critically important Iran-based funding and facilitation network," Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S. Cohen explained in a press release.

"We will continue targeting this crucial source of al Qaeda's funding and support," Cohen added, "as well as highlight Iran's ongoing complicity in this network's operation."

The new boss of al Qaeda's Iran-based network

yasin_al_suri.jpg

Yasin al Suri, al Qaeda's leader in Iran who was reportedly placed under "protective custody."

Although the Treasury Department does not say it, the US government's efforts to expose the Iran-al Qaeda relationship have likely impacted the way the network operates. Today's designation tracks with earlier press reporting on the reshuffling of al Qaeda's Iran-based leadership.

In February 2012, Sky News reported that al Fadhli assumed the top post in al Qaeda's Iran franchise after al Suri, who had headed the network for years, was placed under "protective custody" by the Iranians following his exposure by US authorities. Sky News also accurately named al Harbi as al Fadhli's deputy. Other details in the account remain unsubstantiated. [For more, see LWJ report, New leader of al Qaeda network in Iran named.]

Al Fadhli is a longtime al Qaeda operative who was previously designated by the US government in 2005. At the time, al Fadhli was "considered an al Qaeda leader in the Gulf" who "provided support to Iraq-based fighters for attacks against" the US-led Coalition. Al Fadhli was also a "major facilitator" for deceased AQI [al Qaeda in Iraq] leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi.

And prior to his involvement in the Iraqi insurgency, al Fadhli "was involved in several terrorist attacks that took place in October 2002 including the attacks on the French ship MV Limburg and against US Marines on Faylaka Island in Kuwait."

Al Fadhli "began working with al Qaeda's Iran-based facilitation network in 2009 and was later arrested by the Iranians," according to Treasury. Al Fadhli "was subsequently released by the Iranians in 2011 and went on to assume the leadership of the facilitation network from Yasin al Suri later that year."

Today, al Fadhli's network provides "funding for al Qaeda activities in Afghanistan and Pakistan", and moves "fighters and money through Turkey to support al Qaeda-affiliated elements in Syria."

Al Qaeda-affiliated groups are openly fighting the Syrian regime, and al Qaeda emir Ayman al Zawahiri has called on jihadists to topple Bashar al Assad. Meanwhile, the Iranians support Assad's regime and are helping it fight the rebels. It is not immediately clear why Iran would support "elements" that are likely opposed to Assad, but such duplicity is not uncommon.

Al Fadhli is also "leveraging his extensive network of Kuwaiti jihadist donors to send money to Syria via Turkey," according to Treasury.

New details on Iran-al Qaeda relationship

The Treasury Department's announcement contains new details concerning the "agreement" between Iran and al Qaeda. "Under the terms of the agreement between al Qaeda and Iran," Treasury reports, "al Qaeda must refrain from conducting any operations within Iranian territory and recruiting operatives inside Iran while keeping Iranian authorities informed of their activities."

"In return," Treasury continues, "the Government of Iran gave the Iran-based al Qaeda network freedom of operation and uninhibited ability to travel for extremists and their families."

If al Qaeda members "violate these terms" they "run the risk of being detained by Iranian authorities."

The previous head of the network, Yasin al Suri, "agreed to the terms of this agreement with Iran with the knowledge of now-deceased al Qaeda leader 'Atiyah 'Abd al Rahman."

Rahman, who was killed in a drone strike in August 2011, was designated by the Treasury Dept. the month before. According to that designation, Rahman was "appointed by Osama bin Laden to serve as al Qaeda's emissary in Iran, a position which allowed him to travel in and out of Iran with the permission of Iranian officials."

New rewards offered

In addition to Treasury's new designation, the State Department has added al Fadhli and al Harbi to its Rewards for Justice Program. The US government is offering "a reward of up to $7 million for information leading to the location of al Fadhli and $5 million for information leading to the location of al Harbi."

These rewards are in addition to the $10 million sum offered for information on al Suri's whereabouts.

Despite the US government's efforts, however, Treasury says that "Iran continues to allow al Qaeda to operate a core pipeline that moves al Qaeda money and fighters through Iran to support al Qaeda activities in South Asia." And "this network also sends funding and fighters to Syria."
*************************************************

And Iran stays front and center.

Treasury Designates Syrian Entity, Others Involved in Arms and Communications Procurement Networks and Identifies Blocked Iranian Aircraft

http://www.treasury.gov/press-center/press-releases/Pages/tg1714.aspx

...Syria’s Army Supply Bureau

Syria’s Army Supply Bureau, an element of the Syrian Ministry of Defense involved in conventional military and missile-related procurement, is being identified today as an entity belonging to the Government of Syria as well as designated under E.O. 13382 for providing support for Iran’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL) subsidiary Iran Electronics Industries (IEI). The Army Supply Bureau has standing contracts with IEI. In March 2012, IEI prepared to send two large shipments of communications equipment, including VHF/UHF jammers, to Syria’s Army Supply Bureau. These shipments were valued at more than $2 million and financed by the Central Bank of Syria. In August 2012, international press reported on the suspected use of jamming equipment by the Syrian government against Syrian anti-government fighters at an army checkpoint at the entrance to Aleppo.

Syria’s Army Supply Bureau was sanctioned by the U.S. Department of State, pursuant to the Iran, North Korea, and Syria Nonproliferation Act (INKSNA), in December 2011...

...Identified Aircraft Operated by Iran Air, Mahan Air, and Yas Air

The Treasury Department is also identifying as blocked property 117 aircraft operated by Iran Air, Mahan Air, and Yas Air. In the summer of 2012, Iran used Iran Air and Mahan Air flights between Tehran and Damascus to send military and crowd control equipment to the Syrian regime. This activity was coordinated with Hizballah, which in mid-August was designated pursuant to E.O. 13582 for providing support to the Government of Syria.

Iran has used deceptive measures when shipping such items to Syria, by using a combination of passenger and cargo flights and declaring illicit cargo as humanitarian and other licit goods. In the case of Yas Air, the Iranian cargo airline has moved IRGC-QF personnel and weapons under the cover of humanitarian aid. For example, a Turkish inspection in March 2011 of a Yas Air flight bound for Syria - which listed “auto spare parts” on its cargo manifest - found weapons including Kalashnikov AK-47 assault rifles, machine guns, nearly 8,000 rounds of ammunition, as well as an assortment of mortar shells.

Iran Air was designated pursuant to E.O. 13382 on June 23, 2011 for providing support and services to Iran’s MODAFL, Iran’s Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO), and the IRGC, which are tied to Iran’s ballistic missile program. On numerous occasions since 2000, Iran Air has shipped military-related equipment on behalf of MODAFL and IRGC...

The Osama bin Laden Myth
Institute for Political Economy ^ | November 26, 2012 | The Osama bin Laden Myth

The interview below with Osama bin Laden was conducted by the Karachi, Pakistan, daily newspaper, Ummat and published on September 28, 2001, 17 days after the alleged, but unsubstantiated, al Qaeda attack of September 11, 2001, on the World Trade Center twin towers and Pentagon. The interview was sensational. The alleged “mastermind” of 9/11 said that he and al Qaeda had nothing to do with the 9/11 attack. The British Broadcasting Corporation’s World Monitoring Service had the interview translated into English and made public on September 29, 2001.

Osama bin Laden’s sensational denial was not reported by the US print and TV media. It was not investigated by the executive branch. No one in the US Congress called attention to bin Laden’s refusal of responsibility for the greatest humiliation ever inflicted on a superpower.

To check my memory of the lack of coverage, I googled “Osama bin Laden’s interview denying responsibility for 9/11.” Some Internet sites reproduced the interview, but the only mainstream news source that I found was a 1 minute YouTube video from CNN in which the anchor, after quoting an al Jazeera report of bin Laden’s denial, concludes that “we can all weigh that in the scale of credibility and come to our own conclusions.” In other words, bin Laden had already been demonized, and his denial was not credible.

The sensational news was unfit for US citizens and was withheld from them by the american “free press,” a press free to lie for the government but not to tell the truth.

Post #39:

The truth about Osama’s death has been known for years, dead in a rivalry conflict in Pakistan in 2005.

The details are here on Threat Matrix, including the alert to the then DIA chief.

But of course the kooks are more interested in how Osama had nothing to do with 9.11 and how Busch blew up the WTC. I have never seen a more gullible people outside the “Arab Street”.

I found it rather interesting that there were no witnesses to Osama’s “burial at sea” and that the Seals were offed shortly afterwards.

I have zero credibility in Zero and his minions.

Too many missing dots to connect the whole picture and too little time to do so.

I’m reading Vince Flynn’s “Last Man”. Some very interesting parallels to the Benghazi attack.,....and it was published before that went down.

I’m reading Vince Flynn’s “Last Man”.

A couple of days ago I also began reading the same book. He always has the inside track on current events; wonder if he reads TM.
