Spilled Milk (Thomas Sowell)
Jewish World Review ^ | February 1, 2011 | Thomas Sowell

Despite the old saying, "Don't cry over spilled milk," the Environmental Protection Agency is doing just that.

We all understand why the Environmental Protection Agency was given the power to issue regulations to guard against oil spills, such as that of the Exxon Valdez in Alaska or the more recent BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. But not everyone understands that any power given to any bureaucracy for any purpose can be stretched far beyond that purpose.

In a classic example of this process, the EPA has decided that, since milk contains oil, it has the authority to force farmers to comply with new regulations to file "emergency management" plans to show how they will cope with spilled milk, how farmers will train "first responders" and build "containment facilities" if there is a flood of spilled milk.

Since there is no free lunch, all of this is going to cost the farmers both money and time that could be going into farming-- and is likely to end up costing consumers higher prices for farm products.

It is going to cost the taxpayers money as well, since the EPA is going to have to hire people to inspect farms, inspect farmers' reports and prosecute farmers who don't jump through all the right hoops in the right order. All of this will be "creating jobs," even if the tax money removed from the private sector correspondingly reduces the jobs that can be created there.

Does anyone seriously believe that any farmer is going to spill enough milk to compare with the Exxon Valdez oil spill or the BP oil spill?

Do you envision people fleeing their homes, as a flood of milk comes pouring down the mountainside, threatening to wipe out the village below?

Thanx jazusamo !

EPA: An unelected, flunky, TOTALLY OUT-OF-CONTROL bureaucracy populated with radical, no-growth, Marxist, environmental nut-jobs wielding rogue powers based in junk science. A cancer on the private sector. Ultimately, the EPA is not about the environment. It is about legislating from the Executive Branch in Soviet Agency style. It has the convenient unconstitutional feature of allowing the Obama Administration to pursue an extreme global warming agenda, to make energy prices necessarily sky-rocket, and gain sweeping regulatory control over the US economy without a politically difficult vote in congress.

Sometimes the slope really is slippery.

And sometimes someone MAKES the slope slippery.
Milk? Really? REALLY?

I think we need to bring the horsewhip back as punishment for something this stupid.

Since it does not impede real polluters and is one of the biggest drags on our economy when you consider the reduction in overal GDP due to it’s ridiculous code, it should be amongst the first round of legacy departments to be eliminated.

I’m waiting for the conservative candidates with their eyes on the primary to come out with their list of departments to eliminate as part of their platform.

The only candidate I will vote for will be one who has a list of departments to eliminate, and basically my vote will go to the candidate with the longest list, who also advocates military buildup, is a 100% social conservative their whole career - or have a great story about seeing the truth of conservative values, and who seeks to return the Presidency back to what it was before 1900, i.e., not a political circus job.

Egads! Again, libs just can't tell the difference between a big and a small problem.
Or in this case a problem that is not a problem at all.
Spilled milk = food for bacteria.
Just an excuse to make up more rules for everyone else to follow.
The ultimate purpose is to force everyone to become vegan.

There’s no doubt the EPA should be eliminated. They’re so out of control that even if they were reined in a few years down the road they could get more out of control under another whackjob president.

Are we yet ready to ask, 'Why are the collapse of the American economy and the world economy being orchestrated?'

It isn't about green causes, though the commie slugs like Van JOnes would tell you that.

It isn't about wage and work hour inequities, but Barry's friend Andy Stern would have you believe that.

It isn't about failing mortgages on single family homes, though the entire criminal enterprise democrap party wants you to believe that.

No, in the final analysis it is about the debt leaders of governments have amassed in your name that is now impossible for you the tax serf to repay. Oh, the debt will not disappear in the new world economic order.

Every paycheck you earn will have a share withheld to pay the oligarchs who have been planning this probably since the Monster from Jekyl Island got loose and the federal reserve was born to rule America and thus the world governments using 'dollars' in one way or another. And if a few billion or so of the 'teeming populations' die off in the next five years, well, that was one of the plans all along, because the global oligarchs believe there are just too many humans on this planet making cvontrol of them more difficult.

I adore this man! Even though this was not meant to be funny, I had to keep scrolling back to make sure it wasn’t a satire. He had me in stitches over the spilled milk.

These people are absolutely insane!! Disband these rogue agencies NOW!

I would bet the farm that Dr. Sowell enjoys writing this type column to expose the absolute stupidity of agencies and individuals of our government more than most other columns.

You know it really could get dangerous to be an EPA regulator. Some people don’t push that easy.

it has the authority to force farmers to comply with new regulations to file "emergency management" plans to show how they will cope with spilled milk,

That's EASY. The emergency management plan is to borrow all the cats from the local shelter.

Oil in milk...really? Are you telling me the feds (EPA) has nothing better to do that worry about the amount of "oil" that could be spilled? From what, a tanker truck? Sheesh, even an entire tanker truck full of whole milk couldn't contain more than what, an ounce or two of oil?

Obviously EPA is an agency looking for a meaningful mission. If they are down to looking at oil in milk, it is time to cut their funding by 80 to 90 percent. That way they can focus on a meaningful mission, and get the {expletive} out of everyone else's hair...
