Will High Costs Kill Merkel's Green Revolution? ( Germany and Green Energy )
SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL ^ | By SPIEGEL Staff

Chancellor Angela Merkel's vision of completing Germany's conversion to renewable energy by 2050 is bold and ambitious. But she has remained silent about the risks and the tremendous costs the green revolution will entail -- for Germany and all of Europe. By SPIEGEL Staff

Germany's dream of an energy revolution has already come true in the small town of Morbach, nestling between wooded hills in the southwestern Hunsrück region. Morbach boasts 14 wind turbines, 4,000 square meters of solar panels and a biogas plant, all located on the site of a former military base straddling a hill above the town. Together, they produce three times more electricity than the 11,000-strong community needs.

Politicians and corporate executives from all over the world have visited the site. "They all want to see how it's done," says Morbach Mayor Gregor Eibes, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party. Morbach has already achieved what Merkel is now planning for the whole of Germany.

She wants to lift Germany to Morbach's levels in just four decades, after which Europe's largest economy will meet most of its energy requirements from the sun and the wind, biomass and water. Drawing on the inexhaustible supply of energy on land and at sea would help combat global warming. And it would mean an end the dependence on Arab oil and to fears of nuclear accidents and of the mood swings of Russia's gas suppliers.

The government laid out this bold, green vision in its

draft energy plan earlier this month. It wants to increase the share of renewable energy from 16 percent today to 80 percent by 2050.

lol. When the wind gets too high the wind turbines stop and if its cloudy the solar panels are useless. There have been power outages in Europe because of this hugely expensive “green energy” and people have probably died.

Freezing and dying is a small price to pay for Gaia.

In fact, ordinary people dying is a good thing because there are too many people crapping up Mother Earth as it is.

All those pesky “little people” ruin it for Bono and Algore and the other deserving elites. A healthy dose of ecological homicide is natural and welcome.

Back in the 80’s Costeau tested a sailboat that had a vertical stack instead of sails, it would catch the wind from any direction which would turn turbines in the stack, which produced power to drive the ship, An updated version of this would seem to be simpler and more efficient than windmills and cheaper to build.

Clearly as one wades through the whole article and views the many charts, it is clear they are on a path that will bankrupt their nation(s). And if not at least increase their cost of living standards to eventual un-bearable levels. On one issue I must congrats the French. They long ago embraced nuclear power in a big way.

4,000 square meters of solar panels

Producing sporadic electricity sold to other Germans for 50 cents per kWh. Solar in Germany is not only stupid, but a scam. If it were replicated in New Jersey, the Mafia would own all the panels. Here in Virginia we have a "solar plant" being built by a felon who strong-armed the town into contracting for the power that it might occasionally produce for a 50% higher price than reliable power with an annual price escalator. The felon and his partner will probably get a nice reward when the controlling scam artists in Maryland take their company public (their company consisting of a number of these tax and rate payer subsidized boondoggles).

Ernest, you are *on fire* with these. Of course, Al Gore will now demand payment for your expanded carbon footprint...
