Apparently no toilet flushing either with the pumps off. That can’t be very pleasant...

Toilets are not working. Ship is being towed to Ensenda (about 90 miles south of border). Passengers will be bussed back to California. Sounds like a great vacation.

Coast Guard Reaches Cruise Passengers Stranded Off Mexican Coast
LEE FERRAN
Nov. 9, 2010

A U.S. Coast Guard cutter has reached a crippled Carnival cruise ship, stranded off the western coast of Mexico since early Monday morning with nearly 4,500 passengers and crew on board after an engine room fire.

Two officers from the Coast Guard are now aboard the ship to help ensure the safety of the passengers until two tugboats chartered by Carnival are expected to arrive midday today to tow the ship to a Mexican port. Though Carnival did confirm that three people on the ship were treated in the ship’s infirmary for panic attacks, a spokesman for the Coast Guard said no major medical concerns had been reported. No one was injured in the fire.

The Carnival Splendor, a 113,000-ton behemoth, suffered an engine fire early Monday morning which knocked out the ship’s power, including air conditioning, hot food service, flushing toilets and telephones, Carnival said in a statement.

The fire was extinguished in about three hours. Even after the tugboats reach the ship at midday today, it could be at least 24 hours before it can be safely towed to the Mexican port of Ensenada, the cruiseline said in a statement Tuesday morning.

However, engineers were not able to restore power to the ship, which was operating on auxiliary generators, the statement said. As of Tuesday, “several key hotel systems, including air conditioning, hot food service and telephones are not available,” the cruise line said.

On Monday night, engineers were able to restore toilet service to cabins and public bathrooms, along with cold running water, Carnival said. “The ship’s crew continues to actively work to restore other services.”
