This is sad. The schools do nothing about the bullies.
Those bullies would have left him alone once he’d shot their eyes out. :)
She should be charged with child endangerment. If you're going to give a kid a weapon for self defense, give a weapon that can actually take down an assailant.
Good gracious: a picture of mom would have been enough.
Guilty! Death penalty!
I’ve always said that the best way for parents to handle bullies is to hire bigger bullies.
The "yeah boss" toadies will back off once you do that. I used it once and it worked. No more bullies after that.
I don’t know anything about this case but a defense of ‘necessity’ would bring official malpractice, if any, to light. However, Mojica doesn’t look like she has enough money to do anything but plead out.
Not that it matters because this happened in CT, but will this mother get a jury trial?
I may be reading into this too much but I have sympathy for someone in her position. From the story, she appears to be poor and not in a position to defend her son from getting bullied so she did what she could—give him a weapon to defend himself—and now is in trouble for it. This is the type of case where mercy should come into play and some authority figure should expand the investigation to see if the kid was getting bullied and, if so, stop it before someone does get hurt.
The schools do nothing, so this is rational.
I put 8 penny nails in a length of broom handle and wrapped it tightly with leather bootlaces on one occaision at that age.
Whatever is needed, if the bullies parents or the school didnt want the bullies hurt or killed, they would stop them before it comes to this.
People don’t look their best in police mug shots, after being hauled down to the local jail.
My first reaction on seeing her face was also negative. But take another look. She really looks terribly upset, worried, depressed, and scared. So would anyone if they were a single mother, their kid was being beaten up by bullies, and then was arrested for trying to help him out.
Not a good idea giving him a knife or a bb gun, because it could have gotten him in big trouble, maybe juvenile detention. But I think most likely she is desperate and really is on the ropes.
“Police say 38-year-old Sylvia Mojica gave her son a BB gun and folding knife to carry with him at school on Friday”
For some reason, I got this image of the kid heading off to school wearing a coonskin cap, too.
On a more serious note, it wasn’t the best idea mom ever had, but I can understand the frustration.
Some of the worst bullying takes place around her kid’s age (12). You’ve got children who think they’re a big stinking deal now that they are in junior high/middle school. And most of them won’t get the maturity to lay off for another three or four years.
As for the schools, well, they’re usually worthless in my experience. I didn’t have too much trouble with bullies, but I knew people that did. There’s nowhere to turn for a lot of them. The teachers either don’t give a damn or get the situation wrong (I remember more than a few bullied kids getting in trouble for trying to fend off bullies). The administrative types were pissed off if they had to bother themselves with you (with guidance counselors, ironically being the worst of the bunch).
Isn’t going through life with that face punishment enough?
You gotta be creative when you send your little guy into one of our Super Max Government Educational Compounds.
And the greatest weapon is attitude.
Too bad the little guy didn't have a father to teach him how to deal with bullies mentally, not just logistically.
I don’t blame this lady one iota.
When did the world become so wimbly wumbly?
How old does the constitution say you have to be to have 2nd Amendment rights?
