I do not wish to see these parent prosecuted, but I don’t approve of their decision. I’d let my kid sail, take sailing lessons, race - but I wouldn’t let them solo camp, solo hike, solo fly, solo deep ocean sail - and I don’t think that makes me overprotective. I further believe my kids could live perfectly happy and adventurous lives without extreme solo stuff.

True but if Abbey grew up in a nautical family and had a love for sailing and the sea, she could reasonably be expected to be a competent sailor by age 16.

Sixteen year olds used to be expected to function as adults. So, as long as she is mature for her age, skilled at what she does and has the best equipment available, I respect what she has done. I wouldn't want it for my family be we are a landlubbing family.

Abby's handling of the boat in monstrous seas is a testament to her skill and mental presence.

Furthermore, it's not as if she set sail and disappeared over the horizon not to be heard from again until her next scheduled port of call. That she was able to remain in communication with shore the entire time directly or indirectly via emergency beacons is testament to the vastly improved state of communications which further reduces risks she was exposed to.

The "parents" of this sailing genius should be expected ie: sued to recover the cost of the rescue since they approved/arranged the whole publicity stunt thing.

Would you agree then that the owners of every ocean going vessel and crew rescued be sued as well?

What about rescues on the Great Lakes, or any other body of water, sue them as well?

Aren’t they taking “risks” by plying the waters and therefore placing the prospect of death at the feet of the rescuers? Aren’t they costing taxpayers money when they need rescuing?

All sailboat and motor boat owners, kayakers, whitewater rafters, etc. beware, if you’re not doing something “productive” or something that has a “purpose” when you’re out on the waters, you better have a good attorney.

To keep your attempt to cherry pick the quote of mine out of context in its proper context, what I said is: “The family doesn’t have to justify this to anyone, especially folks like you who have spent an entire day doing nothing but tearing down this girl and her family.”

The key statement here is that “The family doesn’t have to justify this to anyone…”. But most especially those on this thread who have done nothing but heap scorn and derision on them.

Again, why does this girl or anyone else need to do the world a “great service” when they choose to go do something? You sound like she should be finding a cure for cancer instead of doing anything else.

Your opportunity to state your opinion was never placed into question.

Self-serving is admirable for many reasons. Why does it have to have some public or community purpose? People like to challenge themselves, test their limits. They learn alot about themselves and grow from those experiences. I take it you have a problem with that based on your innumerable posts on this matter.

I take it you would rather those folks who have no “purpose” other than to be “self-serving” do nothing except “serving others”? If so, it speaks volumes about where you’re coming from on this matter.

I’m not “fawning” over her, I’m saying she and her family don’t deserve the criticism being heaped upon them by people who don’t even know them.

Has it ever crossed your mind that kids can do both? I will present Boy Scouts as a classic example. They do things that have no purpose other than to have fun and then they do things that benefit their communities.

Would you be saying the same of a Scout troop who got stranded on a mountaintop because they weren’t doing anything that had a purpose other than to have fun and were challenging themselves, testing their limits?

Nope....the thrill seeker record setter types are the ones that should have to pay back their "rescue". Especially outrageous ones like the 16 yr old.......

Hope they get their money back from the kook family

I don’t mind if the “thrill seeker record setter types” provide proof of a rescue contigency fund. That would show that, if they do get into trouble, they have no intent on being a financial burden to any country or company that is called upon to rescue them.

And I am not a maritime lawyer, although I did stay in a Holday Inn Express a few times, so if I’m wrong, then I will accept the lashing.

There are some things that should be kept private...why is there an option on FR to send private messages?

I don't use private messages...Mostly rats, back stabbers and groupies use that. Ya got something to say to me, keep it public.

Just trying to help you because you are so very angry.

I'd rather get help from an AIDs infected pit bull...

Or maybe help from a homeowners association infected by the plague.

Capiche?

What did the Australian 16 yr old accomplish other than a way to make money and a vehicle with which to brag? WHAT did they accomplish?

Too easy. One, money. I know you made an exception, but you can't, because it gives her freedom for the next 12 months for the PLAN.

Which may go somethimg like

My thoughts only, she's probably got a better one - the girl plans everything
