I agree....This rich brat should have been collecting hats for the homeless....Teaching cannibals Christianity, and collecting absorbent material for the gulf oil spill!

How dare her!

She accomplished freedom (at least for a short time),

She was captive before?

and the most valuable lesson of all - the lesson of failure and consequence for ones' own actions.

And it cost a lot of money for that. Not her money either. And a ship's Captain could have drowned. And people are cheering her?

You think that’s funny? You deride selfless acts?

>> It's kind of pathetic for us to butt sit at computer screens and criticise someone like this girl for doing something more than butt sitting at a computer screen. Society needs more young people exactly like this.

+1 for the sailing expedition.

In the greater context of things teenagers experience, this is not one situation that I frown upon.

Would you be this emotional about a kid that had a food drive for the poor?
A kid that collected coats for the homeless?
A kid that raised money for children with cancer?

Why does every FR thread end up talking about Obama?

What is so commendable about asking other people to clothe a hobo?

Name calling is all you have? Nothing else? No points? No debate? Just emotion?

You do realize that a lot of people are out of work, right?

Here is the questions you asked me:

Tell me. What was the benefit of her trip? What did she accomplish?

As you succinctly pointed out in your post #317, her only objective was to become famous.

Thus the only possible benefit of her trip would be to make her famous. Should she fail, she would continue as an unknown person.

The disaster that just befell her, ironically, propelled her into the limelight, the very limelight that you yourself told us was her only objective.

Thus, in answer to you question 'what did the trip accomplish?', it accomplished her original mission, the very mission you outlined in #317.

“Obviously Magellan was an ego centric publicity hound out for money and glory...”

Was he the guy with his parents on Good Morning America?

Magellan was the guy who couldn't get his ship around The Horn in one piece, and in trying to avoid that course, discovered an inland route through the islands of the Tierra del Fuego.

As it turned out, those inland channels also have their dangers, as the rusting carcasses of many foundered ships litter the channels.

You have an odd perspective on relative risk, or perhaps I should point out, you have no perspective whatsoever. When you were at university, by any chance were you required to take a course called probability and statistics? Have you ever heard of that? Do you know how it works? re you aware that insurance actuaries calculate risk? Do you know HOW they calculate risk? If you really think letting your kids drive, or water ski or learn to fly an airplane are the statistically equivalent risks of letting them sail around the world alone on a boat, why do you let your kids do those things?

“You an the other self appointed righteous fruitcake can talk all the crap ya want...But keep it public.”

There are some things that should be kept private...why is there an option on FR to send private messages?

Just trying to help you because you are so very angry.

They do not have a lot of money and they do have a lot of mouths to feed.

They will have one less mouth to feed if they keep encouraging dangerous stunts like this.

There is a saying in Spanish: Cada loco con su tema. I guess the public schools must be your tema. That the best you could come up with? Kind of a stretch. And totally off topic. But I get a free pass from that particular kind of blame because I went to parochial schools.

You can’t help someone that angry and emotional. It is best to simply avoid them.

So letting children put life at risk is grounds for terminating parental rights?

Absolutely.

How about pilots licenses? Fishing licenses? Hunting licenses? Maybe those who let their children solo at sailing on any body of water? Water skiing maybe?

LaLydia is making a very valid point, and water skiing or sailing on "any body of water" is quite different from being solo on the Indian ocean during the storm season.

The parents are very odd people to encourage this high risk behaviour. Yes, I think they should be looked at more closely.
