People seem to have a lot of emotion invested in this.

Odd.

They are very emotional over a kid that could have killed herself, and others, just so she could say “I DID IT!” So what?

Did you read on another thread that this was about sibling rivalry with her brother? Pretty expensive sibling rivalry. It only cost money. It could have cost lives.

Next we'll have a sister/brother moon race! Think of the money it will cost to rescue them!!

God help us all!

She should be tryign to cure cancer!

True heroism is focusing on others needs and not your own wants.

Would you be this emotional about a kid that had a food drive for the poor?

A kid that collected coats for the homeless?

A kid that raised money for children with cancer?

I think it shows what personal qualities are valued. Qualities like duty, honor, taking responsibility especially in a way that benefits others, charity, humility, compassion, doing what is unpopular but right - all these are gone by the wayside.

Now what are valued are personal physical beauty (plastic or not), fame, being an admired sexual object, being number one at something - blue ribbon - the team won etc - and if one gets to be on TV or the internet, that’s the jackpot.

Shallow and tinny and IMO worthless. Absolutely worthless. Such shallow endeavors are only “satisfying” because a whole bunch of other people “luv” you and praise you. Doing something that few people know about - or even none - just because it’s the right thing to do gives an inner happiness that is not comparable to the fanclub stuff. This is like a version of Americon Idol or something (not that I’ve ever seen that, don’t have a TV) but plenty of people on FR have long threads about it.

Sounds like the most boring thing in the three worlds.

While I think it’s more than just wanting to be famous, for sake of discussion, I’ll accept that for a moment.

She only did this to be famous. OK.

So what? That’s a good enough reason, as if any reason was needed, to try this, or any other challanging, dangerous, enterprise.

No. Next you'll have a 15 year old trying this. Then 14. How about 10? Would you cheer a 10 year old? Where does this "I BROKE A RECORD!" garbage end? What purpose does it serve?

Geez...her parents are on Good Morning America...every single day.

Next...she’ll be on Oprah, Dave Letterman, etc., and supported by all the liberals who think we should donate to her next venture.

I agree with all of that.

Another poster tried saying that this kind of adventure would tell this girl what she's made of. At 16?! You do dangerous stunts to "find yourself"? At 16? *sigh*

As you pointed out, she only did it to be famous. Now she is.

Mission accomplished.

Really? So letting children put life at risk is grounds for terminating parental rights? Should parents whose teens get driver's licences lose their rights? How about pilots licenses? Fishing licenses? Hunting licenses? Maybe those who let their children solo at sailing on any body of water? Water skiing maybe?

“Sending your kid, who doesn’t know any better, in a little boat, into hurricane force winds is tantamount to having them play on a freeway. Not bold, stupid.”

I agree. Of course that is NOT what happened here, so I am not sure why you posted it, but I do agree!

(You did know that Abby has been sailing for more than a decade, right?)

What did she accomplish?

She accomplished freedom (at least for a short time), and the most valuable lesson of all - the lesson of failure and consequence for ones' own actions.
