I really think all the arguments about freedom, such as yours, are equating minors with adults. There is a difference.

As you posted, some 16 year olds LIED to get into the military.

First of all they had to lie.

Second of all you think that was a good thing?

How young do you want soldiers to be?

I think 18 is the legal consensus in this country, and I’m comfortable. I don’t want the “freedom” to have 16 year olds or for that matter 10 year olds in the military.

And if it’s “freedom” to send your kid out on the open ocean for months all by herself -

why not a 15? 14? 13? 12? 11? At what age would you say: “Those parents are wrong?”

It is not about freedom, in my opinion, when you are talking about minors.

I already read that. Don't disagree about crossing the Southern Ocean, but due to the timing she had little choice other than to give up. Just leaving the sight of land is risky.

Of course it seems many here would support that.

I understand now why America is where it is today.

The kids on the Mayflower were with their parents and experienced sailors, as well. No one is saying children should not be allowed to TRAVEL.

There is a lot of equivocation in the posts defending this sail. Since we don’t want a 16 year old sailing solo in deep ocean in the winter, we obviously don’t want children sailing with their parents on the Mayflower?

God spared her! I’m sure she was groomed by her parents for this. At 16 yrs you can not imagine your own mortality and mother natures cruelty.

Or just think of those poor children who had to trek across the great wilderness to settle this country - not to mention the hard work they were in for once they settled! Poor things. Wonder what agency stepped in to rescue them from their uncaring parents.....

Well I’ll grant you the French were worse the useless in WW2 and most of the post war era. I blame totally incompetent generalship in WW1 that got just about every able bodied Frenchman killed or wounded. The French military is just how recovering from WW1. If they return to form but with better generalship they will be one of the most powerful forces in the world. Poo poo the French at your own risk, however I suggest reading about French loses in WW1, heart breaking how bad generals killed millions of the best Frenchmen of that generation. An ENTIRE generation of young Frenchman killed. It is not surprising that it has taken more then a little time to undo that damage. Personally I am glad the French are back, the west will need them in the upcoming war of civilizations.

No. Without a special boat and equipment she'd be dead. The boat was weighted so it will be hard to scuttle. She was incapable of repairing her mast. And without her EPIRBs they'd still be searching for her. Fancy technology saved her and not capability.

I’m not sure I’m understanding what the problem is? People climb mountains, explore, fly planes, sail boats around the world, become test flights, go into space. Chances are taken - individuals who have freedom can make these choices - slaves cannot. A generation ago, 16 years old was old enough to lie about your age and join the military - to take your chances to fight for your country. I have not heard this girl complain about anything - she is chasing her dream, willing to pay the price. Isn’t that what individual freedom is all about? Don’t understand the backlash on Free Republic?

I agree completely. I am proud of this young lady. If you read her blog, you will see that she is brave, intelligent, articulate and quite motivated. Some of the nasty comments on FR make me ashamed. She is the type of girl that we should be encouraging, not defaming.

She was groomed by her parents. She trained for it, if she was tossed in a boat without any knowledge she would never gotten 100 miles from her starting point.

And certainly God saved her, in as much by his hand as by her God given talents.

Her parents have 7 kids (with an 8th kid on the way) and are in massive debt. The recession has killed the father’s shipbuilding business.

This was an ill-advised and horribly-unprepared stunt for advertising sponsorship income.
