Former house speaker Dan Webster made it official Thursday afternoon telling a crowd of about 200 supporters that he has the experience to take back Florida's 8th district for Republicans. "Today I'm declaring my candidacy for the United States Congress," Webster said to an eruption of cheers.
Politicians in Washington have "cast aside the principles that have made this country great," Webster said.
He talked about "lower taxes and individual freedom" and restoring "integrity" to Washington but made no mention of Alan Grayson, the controversial Democrat who currently occupies the seat.
Speaking with reporters after the announcement, Webster said the concerns of his family initially kept him out of the race.
"Once we had a unified family, I got in," he said.
Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty was on hand promising his full support for Webster's campaign.
Former Governor Jeb Bush and former vice presidential candidate Mike Huckabee both wrote endorsements that were read to the crowd.
