Mousavi ignores government order, calls for peaceful demonstrations

updated 40 minutes ago

Iranian protesters planned to flood the streets of Tehran in the tens of thousands Thursday after opposition presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi defied a government crackdown and called for another day of demonstrations against what he has denounced as a rigged election.

Mousavi’s announcement, which he made on his Web site, represented a direct challenge to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the Islamic cleric-led government.

Civil government officials and protest leaders alike were awaiting an unusual public statement from Khamenei, who planned to deliver a sermon at Friday prayers, the most important religious address of the week — something he generally does only two or three times a year. In rallies Wednesday, the fifth straight day of largely peaceful demonstrations, protesters dressed in black to mourn the deaths of at least seven compatriots earlier in the week. As they poured into Tehran’s Haft-e Tir Square, they sported wristbands and headbands in Mousavi’s green campaign colors.

Mousavi, who maintains that he won Friday’s election, called for the rallies to continue Thursday to protest the election, which the government declared had been won by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“A number of our countrymen were wounded or martyred,” Mousavi said via a Web site. “I ask the people to express their solidarity with the families ... by coming together in mosques or taking part in peaceful demonstrations.”

“WISH WE COULD GET THAT GOING IN DC... “

It’s a real pisser, ain’t it?? At least we have the Constitutional right to shoot back if the Government comes after us like that, but the Iranians have no such guarantee, they know it, and millions of them have hit the streets raising hell anyway.

Far too many Americans are far too busy Twittering about homosexuals on American TV to even bother to understand what these demonstrations in Iran are about.

This looks more and more like rope-a-dope, with Khamenei having to back Ahmednutjob, and Mousavi and A actually covertly ganging up on him.

Amen!!!!

Any way you can....get info out to the protesters and get them an ‘internet safe-haven’ if you can. Hell.....we’ll probably be needing it before too long the way things are going.

What time of day have the protests been happening? Does it start in the morning Iran time or later in the day. They are at GMT+4:30, so it is 6:43am there right now.

I’m not sure but right now it’s 6:17 am in Iran. I wonder why Iran’s time zone is off by 30 minutes from everywhere else?

why is there time zone 30 minutes off from everywhere else?
-—it used to be that the Mullahs were right , like a broken millenial clock, once every 700 years in their policy stances.
Now, being 30 minutes off, they can’t even claim that.
