Spot TV in the top 100 markets cratered

The Television Bureau of Advertising on Friday released its broadcast TV crunch of the TNS Media Intelligence ad spending estimates put out earlier in the week.

Total broadcast TV, including spot TV, syndication and network TV, dropped 11.9% to $10.5 billion in first quarter.

The decline was driven by spot TV in the top 100 markets which cratered, falling 27.6% to $2.89 billion. In stark contrast, network TV dipped 4.8% to $6.5 billion, while syndication inched up 0.2% to nearly $1.1 billion.

Spending in nine of local broadcast TV's top 10 ad categories was down, led by automotive, down 52.1%. Not a single auto advertiser increased spending. The biggest decline was General Motors, which spent nearly 78% less in first quarter, slashing its budget from $73.6 million to $16.4 million.

Verizon was the top advertiser in local TV, increasing spending by 13.9% to $78.5 million, followed by General Mills, which spent $54.1 million, a 41.6% gain.

Fabulous!... RATES = MONEY!

that is the way to KICK THEM WHERE IT HURTS TO MOST!!. No business, even lefty ones, want to lose money. Just imagine how much money CNN and NBC are losing on cable-news where their rating are LESS than half of FOX ratings.

Lets do the same with DAVID LETTERMAN!... Let’s reduce his rates

Network Television has been terrible for a VERY long time. The shows are terrible and the commercials seem to be about 50% of the air time. The worst are the so called "reality" shows. They are garbage and are only produced because they are very cheap to produce.

Also most network TV shows are also saturated with PC garbage. This has turned off a lot of the viewers.

Datelined June 12, 2009 4:12PM Eastern Time, thereby gauranteeing it would be smothered in Saturday reports so the fewest number of people see it. I'm sure this report was ready much sooner than 4:12 PM, but hey what do I know I'm only a view and I don't count anyway.

Since the majority of the telecasts are pro Obama, I'm sure he will have them suffer no pain.

I long for the days when TV had only about 6 channels, and the TV shows were worth watching. Even the ads they had, when you look back bring a smile to your face.

OK lessee here...

"Not a single auto advertiser increased spending. The biggest decline was General Motors, which spent nearly 78% less in first quarter, slashing its budget from $73.6 million to $16.4 million."

Gee whiz, will wonders never cease.
Gov't Motors didn't "slash" a damned thing.
GM's CEO, The zerO, did.
Geshhhhhh.
