Those new taxes as well as taxes on paid insurance claims were enacted last spring as a way to fund the state-subsidized Dirigo health insurance program. Maine voters will decide whether to repeal the taxes under a people's veto question on Tuesday's ballot.
In his weekend radio address, Baldacci acknowledges that people are fed up with taxes. But he says there are hardworking Mainers who are also fed up with not having quality health care coverage.
The Democratic governor also says the law containing the beverage tax will also decrease the existing tax on health claims.
Republicans have been highly critical of the expanded taxes and contend they would prop up a failed state program.

What does Senator Susan Collins think about this? Perhaps she should give her opinion to the voting populous for Maine.
They have to pay a state tax on their health insurance CLAIMS? You have to be effing kidding me.
Now we tax our illnesses here in America. Nice.
Mainers: Vote the bastards out!
That should go over well with the NASCAR/MALE/BLUE COLLAR crowd?
Did you consider that your citizens may not want "universal health coverage," that they may believe that one should fend for themselves and their families?
Universal health care is not going to make it cheaper or better - it will destroy quality and ration availability - any sensible person understands this.
What’s wrong with these Governors?
My RINO gov. Charlie Crist is a fiscal miser. Only thing I can say good about him. At least he doesn’t raise taxes on my beer and wine.
You folks in Mass. need to dump this clown.
Say what? Money that's already been taxed? Ms. B, y'all need to move on out here, hon.
So the people already paying for their own health-care coverage can pay for the people who don't?!!! What makes anyone think that is a good idea?! Don't we (TAXPAYERS) provide enough 'hand up/hand out' now?! If they haven't figured out how to survive without someone else footing their bills they never will!
If Maine residents were using their brains, they would demand repeal of the state income tax. It drags down their economy.
If Americans in general were using their brains, they would demand repeal of the federal income tax, replacing it with a national sales tax. Instead, we have socialistic tinkering with deductions, credits, rates, etc. - all designed to punish those who work hard to earn more, and reward those who don’t.
Courtesy ping to the dearly departed SheLion, a long time FReeper from Maine. Darlene is looking down from heaven and laughing.
my family just moved to south carolina from maine because we were being taxed to death up there. property taxes is what drove us out. we were too late in registering to vote in SC so we mailed in our absentee ballots up to maine. Voted for the bill. Never liked susan collins much, but Tom Allen is so much worse.
This probably won’t stay on Breaking News for long, so let me get this out before it leaves...
Breaking News, I watched the “Married With Children” episode last night where Al Bundy protested the beer tax!
Baldacci has been a disaster for Maine.
“In his weekend radio address, Baldacci acknowledges that people are fed up with taxes. But he says there are hardworking Mainers who are also fed up with not having quality health care coverage.”
Oh, they’ll have quality health care coverage alright. It’s the health care itself that will suck out loud. Plus, they’ll be paying more taxes. That’s progress in Democratic minds.
There are also 'hardworking' Mainers who are also fed up with capitalism or with America. I guess we should also listen to them.
It is the only way.
You may not kill it, but you will at least set it back.
Hey, Maine voters! When you have your universal healthcare paid for (in part) by the beer and pop tax....AND THE GOVERNMENT TELLS YOU THAT YOU CAN’T GET YOUR TEETH FIXED...will you be happy with all that?
