Was McCain the stinky old fish?
nationalreview ^ | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 09/09/2008 6:43:30 PM PDT by flyfree

In all the furor over the Obama "pig" quote, commentators forgot to examine his entire attack:

"You can put lipstick on a pig. "It's still a pig."

"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."

When read in the entire context you can see what he seems to mean with his dual animate male/female references and why he probably evoked two metaphors: most would think that Obama is talking about both on the ticket and his anger how each has expropriated his change motif.

So in that sense he appears both to insult the 72-year old McCain as the "old fish" that is still going to "stink", and to refer to Palin, who had famously evoked the metaphor of lipstick in a nationally televised address, as still the pig despite the lipstick.

The fact that he used two metaphors to attack the two, and used expressions referring both to age and Palin's recent use of "lipstick" don't seem to be accidents and that's why the cooing crowd got the old fish=McCain;lipsticked pig=Palin immediately.

I'll leave it to others to deconstruct the historical use of pig as a sexist term in the recent climate of generic attacks on Sarah Palin.

PS. The VP nominee was just announced and already Biden has called her "good looking" and now “a step back for women”; most know what he intended, but like most Bidenisms they come out wrongly and confirm a popular perception that he suffers from logorhhea and that there is a different standard of reference applied to Palin due to her sex.

Someone in the campaign has got to manage the ex tempore carelessness.

Hanson is dead on...but we need to be careful we don’t overplay this. Just let it ooze out into the culture, maybe write a light joke or two for Palin and/or McCain to hit him with (somebody at The Corner suggested joking about him losing his cool), then move on.

Is Hillary falling short of the expectations of her supporters?

I’m not saying your wrong, but I do have to wonder where a guy who crams part of his body into a guy’s colon would get off describing women as something that smells bad.

I don't think so...if you read texasdarlin and PUMA I think you'll find they are WOMEN utterly enraged and completely anti-obama.

No! No! No! All of you are wrong.

He clearly used the word "stinky" to call attention to his own initials - B.O.

I understand that, but it sounds like they want her to call for his blood.

I followed your link to that blog, and from there to another pro-Hillary blog with an article titled: Anatomy of a smear - DEBUNKED, finally retracted, but still going where the blogger is furious at her fellow liberals for their treatment of Sarah Palin.

I really loved this one photo she had there. I suspect the dolls on the left are supposed to be older females. ROTFL!!

one of the most macho guys on the planet

Wouldn't it be great to see a debate between B. Hussein O. and Todd Palin?

Bill it as "Metrosexual Versus Macho".

And another debate between Sarah and Michelle. What would we call that one?

I really look forward to the VP debate. B.O.'s people will be telling Say-It-Aint-So-Joe a hundred times a day "Do NOT underestimate the Barracuda! And don't condescend to her!" but I don't think theose words of wisdom will sink in past the hairplug level.

LOL! Well, he did call himself the great uniter...he's united FReepers and Hillary supporters. On one page not long ago, I read they predicted that 30% of Dem women will vote for McCain-Palin.

And that's a whole bucket of blood...

they ate it up. Whooped it up. Their reaction clearly indicated that they new exactly what he meant. Obama’s a jerk. Snide and cheap remarks and doesn’t care who he hurts.

You are 100% correct. Obama is obsessed with Palin. Nobody is even talking about McCain or Biden right now.

These crude insults were both aimed at her.

This is from the guy who flipped Hillary the bird in a public appearance.

"Obama’s a jerk. Snide and cheap remarks and doesn’t care who he hurts."

So what;s new here?

Although he's tried desperately to hide it; he's beginning to display his true nature, and it's typical of your everyday commie lib.

McCain is running such a gentlemanly and civil campaign,,,,that he refuses to allow his supporters to even use the "H" word,,,,(shhhh,,,,Hussein).

So the "officer and a gentleman" is running against...the Chicago thug?

Is this the best a Harvard educated 40 something year old man who's served less than 2 years of a 4 year term in the senate, manage to say against his opponent?

This is sad beyond words.

"Stinky Fish is an attack on women."

Exactly...it implies that the woman is a Ho and trashy. I'm sure it is a real knee slapper on the South side of Chicago right now.
