Elizabeth Edwards Speaks Out on Husband's Affair
ABCNEWS ^ | August 08, 2008 | Jennifer Parker

Posted on 08/08/2008 6:31:27 PM PDT by ricks_place

ABC News' Jennifer Parker reports: Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of former Sen. John Edwards has reacted to the news of her husband's affair, posting a blog titled "Today" on the liberal Daily Kos website and asking for privacy for her family.

In the blog, Elizabeth Edwards says her husband told her about the affair in 2006 and they worked through it. "This was our private matter," she writes.

She heaps blame on the news media for prying into her family's life, writing, "the toll on our family of news helicopters over our house and reporters in our driveway is yet unknown."

She disputes the National Enquirer allegations that her husband fathered a child outside of their marriage.

The Elizabeth Edwards blog on Daily Kos reads: "Our family has been through a lot. Some caused by nature, some caused by human weakness, and some – most recently – caused by the desire for sensationalism and profit without any regard for the human consequences. None of these has been easy. But we have stood with one another through them all. Although John believes he should stand alone and take the consequences of his action now, when the door closes behind him, he has his family waiting for him.

"John made a terrible mistake in 2006. The fact that it is a mistake that many others have made before him did not make it any easier for me to hear when he told me what he had done. But he did tell me. And we began a long and painful process in 2006, a process oddly made somewhat easier with my diagnosis in March of 2007.

Interesting opinion and NOW that she knows she is dying I could see her doing what you say.

I sometimes wonder how people develop serious illnesses. She learned of his affair in 2006. I think most of us here can comprehend the terrible heartbreak she suffered if she loved him.

Illness of the heart and soul can influence our bodies and cause a gradual downhill dwindling of the desire to live or just a decline of the immune system.

I did not care for her politically but hate what she has had to endure.

There are many who castigate McCain for a similar affair but if they really delve into the whole story they will find that his first wife was in a terrible accident crushing her whole pelvis.

It has been suggested that she was then unable to perform her wifely “duties” thus sending him into a series of affairs. I recall reading that she did not contest the divorce - perhaps for this very reason.

airborne, God Bless you! And may you remain cancer free! I did not mean that Mrs. Edwards should have been given a free pass for anything. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the next few weeks. I don't think it is going to mean a thing. He is after all, a demorcat.

THAT is what needs to be investigated!!!

THAT is what they do NOT want looked into.

Where did the $$ come from - $15 K per month!!! -— come from?

Mr. Barron, whoever he is, now says he paid it.

From his private funds?
From the Campaign money?

The Republicans ought to request investigation - NOW.

Since, of course, the Dems won’t.

When she says the process became much easier after her diagnosis it could mean a couple things... One, that she gave him her blessing to continue the affair with the exception that he would stay by her side until she recovered, or passed on. Two, that when she was diagnosed he became more committed to the marriage... Honestly, with John’s apparent rendevous at the hotel recently, I’m guessing it was the first option. If she were convinced she were going to die - she may have given him permission to pursue the relationship, knowing he wouldn’t be alone after she was gone...

I interpreted her statement differently. When you're faced something as serious as dying, everything else becomes minor in comparison, and priorities change. And perhaps, on top of her dire health issues, she did not want her children to have to deal with their parents splitting up, too, especially if she thought she was going to die anyway.

These wives like Hillary, Elizabeth, Spitzer’s wife, and others whose husbands have been unfaithful don’t react like any normal wife would. They must be Stepford wives.

'A process oddly made easier' by her diagnosis. . .

Hate to contemplate here; the possibilites of 'rational explanation' here.

Meantime, if I hear one more spokesperson offering that we should 'pray' for John and Elizabeth and 'family';and 'what a tragedy' has unfolded here; I may need a 'prognosis'. . .

Could also mean that ‘honest John - not’ may have found it easier to reconcile; knowing ‘time’ here; was bracketed. Sounds brutal; but who knows. . .prefer to ‘walk around’ this speculaton; but Elizabeth did throw it out there.

No, Mrs. Edwards, the media is NOT to blame. Your husband is!! He committed adultery, and then he lied repeatedly to cover his sorry ass. It is NOT over. He moved her to NC so he could continue seeing her, when all along he knew that you were sick and dying, and the despicable scum did it anyway.

Unfortunately, there are men and women, like your husband and my ex-husband who are so callous that they don't care about anything but what makes them feel good. I was given 5 years or less to live in 1991 and my husband got involved in an adulterous relationship with a girl at work. He couldn't even wait for me to die, but unlike you, I kicked him out and filed for divorce. I have NO use for a man who cheats on his wife, but one who does it when his wife is dying doesn't deserve to live, IMO. ;) I'm happy to say that not only did I not die, but God totally healed me. I moved on with my new lease on life and I've been very happy. I've never looked back.

His life since then has been troubled. She ruined his credit record, and they had major problems with her two teenage daughters, which brought him significant embarrassment. Believe it or not, I just found out that their divorce was final just last week. LOL

NOt private, for sure, when 'President' is what you aspire to and imagine you are deserving of!

Cannot help but notice that John's 'friend' seems to enjoy talking about this to media. No embarassment; no regrets for 'harm done'; no second thoughts it seems, that she took another woman's husband.

No, she seems to be proud of her accomplishment here. This surely is more hurtful to Elizabeth and family; that and this woman's somewhat 'beaming' gaze as she speaks; and a certain patience that she communicates. ..

Could make a 'wounded and already sick wife'. . .worse. (And if she was in remission, when John confessed; it may already have.)

Think anyone posting on DU; breaks the ‘class’ barrier. NO ONE is deserving of the venomous rot that DU delivers. Cancer or NOT. . .

i know of three couples where the husband cheated on the wife... with all three couples it has taken a lot more than two years to get from the revelation of the affair to where things are getting better... and yet, the Edwards went from the revelation to a stronger marriage than ever in less than two years... with a cancer prognosis on top of it all... unbelievable...

OMG, what a double whammy. That you are still here is a testimony to your strength!

Good for you. Spent 20 years as a nurse in Oncology. Saw several men and women desert a spouse in the late stages of cancer. Even had divorce papers served on one woman while she was so sick, receiving chemo. Any one who can do that is not a human IMO.

Regardless if you agree with all their policies that is one thing I would suspect that most on this board would say about the present incumbents of the White House and the Naval Observatory that their "public marriages" are also true marriages and this is more from what they don't say than what they do. They show it in actions and how they live their lives and the special looks

It is also very interesting that on searches on the web you do not find the speculation about personal indiscretions (sex allegations) that you do for other public figures regardless of how true some are. This to me speaks volumes.

The least he could have done was been with her whenever she speaks about this but then what does he know about moral support or morals in general for that matter.

Very good post. People, of either party, willing to mock cancer are quite conspicuous in their lack of judgement or intelligence.

Still hiding behind his cancer-stricken wife. What a class act! And she’s no prize either, since she knew about this for years, even when she was campaigning for him and trolling for sympathy. They deserve each other. I hope they both end up penniless.
