700 streetlights in L.A. out due to copper thefts (Welcome to 3rd World)

Thieves have disabled about 700 streetlights in Los Angeles, making off with 370,000 feet of valuable copper wiring over the last four months.

L.A. officials said it is a twist on copper thefts that have plagued new home sites and even some office buildings in the last few years.

With some lights pilfered during the summer still out, city officials Tuesday expressed concerns about the safety of passing drivers, pedestrians and bikers. The Los Angeles Public Works Department has already spent nearly $1 million repairing the lights.

"When we have to go out and replace that wire, it takes away from other city services," said Public Works Commissioner Cynthia Ruiz at a news conference on a downtown street corner near samples of copper streetlight wire. "If I had an extra million dollars I could put 10 graffiti crews on the streets."

When streetlights start going out in a major city because people are stealing the wire and selling it for scrap-- congratulations-- you live in a third world country.

Or copper has become a valuable commodity worth the risk of stealing.

This is Bush’s fault. And a quagmire. We’re in the middle of a civil war in Los Angeles that we have no business being in.

My sister-in-law and her husband recently moved to New Orleans to help rebuild (he is a contractor). They are rennovating a house they just bought down there and copper theft is HUGE! I don’t think they have had anything stolen yet, but new builds are always getting hit by copper theft.

Same thing is happening around here, stripping street lights, bridge guard rails and other installations where metal can be quickly stolen and then resold as scrap. They are also stealing outside AC units and pool heaters. It’s the third worlders way of earning money.

My way would be to show them the door.

I was reading a Theordore Dalrymple column the other night about how in England thieves are making off with brass door knockers and stealing roofs from churches, schools and even courthouses. Metal thievery is big and Dalrymple puts the blame for metal prices on China’s voracious need in its industrialization efforts.

—it’s dependent on the price. The night man landed on the moon, I fired a guy at the Climax mine in Colorado for cutting up copper and putting it in his lunchpail, to steal and sell-—

Amateurs loot civilization at night with wirecutters.

Professionals loot civilization in a courtroom in broad daylight, and some of them use the proceeds to run for President.

Street lights are a robbery of tax payer income.

My car has headlights that work just perfect.

In addition, anyone notice that all these major cities are lit up like Vegas, yet they have the most crime? In fact, the bigger the city, the more light, the more crime.

Get rid of the street lights.

Yes, I meant that. The brain isn’t totally in gear yet this morning. How loose is the scrap metal business?

I’m guessing you mean July ‘69. After all, man landed on the moon a half-dozen times. ;)

Anyhoo - whatever happened to the Climax mine? Is it open today? Since copper prices are up, or were up anyway, does this mean Arizonas’ Bingham and Montanas Butte mines are profitable again? It just seems silly that with all the US resources they sit idle.
