GOP Facing Huge Losses in 2008
Newsmax ^ | November 19, 2007 | John Mercurio

Republicans in the Senate and House are in such deep trouble that they may not only see their numbers decrease in next year's election, they may even find the Democrats with a veto-proof majority in the Senate, a Newsmax survey finds.

One year after voters routed Republicans in the midterms, many in the GOP have all but abandoned the goal of re-claiming majority status. Privately, insiders concede, they’d be happy just to hold their ground.

“We’re completely realistic over here. We see the mountain in front of us,” said Rebecca Fisher, communications director for the Senate GOP’s campaign committee, which has struggled to raise money and recruit top candidates this year. “When you look at the big picture, it seems very daunting.”

Indeed, the Senate landscape looks particularly troublesome for Republicans, who are defending 21 seats to the Democrats’ 12. All 12 Democratic incumbents are seeking re-election, while five (and maybe six) Republicans are retiring.

The GOP needs to pick up one or two seats to reclaim the majority; strategists think they’re more likely to lose three or four.

But, Fisher said, there are a few bright spots. “State by state, our vulnerable list is getting shorter.”

She points to moderate GOP incumbents in Maine and Oregon who look safer today than they did six months ago. Nonetheless, she says, the party is concerned about ...

Any GOP loss in 2008 will result from its leadership’s refusal to directly challenge the Rats. In other words, the Republicans have no spine.

I heard a woman on Hannity yesterday, a Leftist whom is voting for Hillary “because she is a woman” (that was her ONLY reason). When Sean told her that Hillary is Socialist and will push the country more in that direction than anyone else, the woman stated, “Sean, this country has been going that way for a long time”.

Maybe it’s just time for us to give up, huh?

Let’s all just quit, and go home, not vote, to hell with it all. What’s everyone think?

I am guessing that we will lose four seats. Part of the problem is our failure to nominate solid conservatives to the GOP ticket. But, and as much as I hate to admit it, the bigger problem is that our country is becoming increasingly more liberal.

This is one of the most important aspects of this seasons elections. Not only is the White House important, but not losing more ground in the Congress is just as important, as well.

i think the gop will lose 4 or 5 seats in the senate, but i think they will hold the line or possibly gain a few seats in the house.

“GOP Facing Huge Losses in 2008” vs “ GOP have all but abandoned the goal of re-claiming majority status. Privately, insiders concede, they’d be happy just to hold their ground. “ = Creative journalism?

The GOP will lose many seats because it will be another referendum on WOT. People believe that it is a sham because Bush and the RINOs refuse to fight the WOT at home by protecting our borders. I predicted the same thing for 2006 and I am predicting it in 2008. The GOP is really not much different than the Dems so most people will not vote for them any longer - mediocrity breeds indifference.

The party structure, from state committees to county committees to town committees has failed to attract younger people.

In New York this is very very obvious. The state chairman, Joe Mondello is 78 years old. The most powerful republican, Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno is 79 years old.

The average age of the county chairs is OVER 75 years old.

The GOP has become the party of old white men clingoing to powerful leadership posts and failing to recruit younger candidates, younger voters, fresh ideas. This has translated to virtually NO grassroots energy, Democrats are now better at getting out the vote and attracting more voters.

It’s from Newsmax...of course it’s creative journalism. I’ve gotten to a place where I check the source, then decide if I’ll even read the article.

If this actually happens it will be because too many people just gave up due to stupid articles like this! The Republicans are their one and only worst enemy! The conservatives are a sleeping giant and Hillary is nothing but hype! The country is waiting for a conservative voice and some courage. That is all that is needed! I am sick of these stupid articles making such predictions a year from the election! The purpose of this article is to tell the Republicans to not even bother to try! It is pure propaganda on the level of any ever used in any war! Tell the troops it is hopeless! Quit and give up! The press is not our friend!

Bingo!

I say Republicans will face losses, but CONSERVATIVES will gain. The GOP has not clearly been conservative for a while.

Frankly, I’m tired of having to ‘hold my nose’ and vote for the lesser of two evils. I can’t in good conscience do it anymore.

Did it strike anyone else funny that the term “veto-proof majority” was used in this report ... this is a presidential election year, and so what the writer is essentially trying to position is that the republicans could win the presidency, but loose enough senators that the presidents vetos could be overridden.

If the republicans were to loose that many senate seats, wouldnt one think that the Dem’s won the white house?
