I ran across this article and have not seen it anywhere. It is 10 pages long and quite a read. I am not knowledgeable in this area at all nor do I know how Esquire leans or how they might chop up their articles. The people the story is about were employed in the Bush Administration. It causes me to question what is really going on.

Putin’s an idiot who embraces the age-old Russian dream of a warm-water port on the Gulf; he believes he can control the Moslems but little realizes that future generations of his countrymen will be speaking Farsi and bowing to Mecca.

A high-level diplomatic source in Tehran...An American attack on Iran will be viewed by Moscow as an attack on Russia.

Is that anything like an "un-named high level source"? When I see the video of Putin spelling out exactly what he will do, then I will take it seriously.

Its so cute when cubs growl, and thats an accurate description of Russian military capability.

Lets not forget Putin lost in Chechnya.

Putin’s not that big and idiot...he could have said this tongue and cheek...but he isnt going to go to War to protect the Iranians...

We might bomb the Iranians from the 7th century AD they live in to 450 B.C, but Putin will still get his oil...and he knows that...

When Pooty Poot is looking at the prospect of a bunch of empty silos on the U.S. Trident submarine fleet (contrasted with his subs who have a nasty tendency to blow up underwater, ala ‘Kursk’), plus a fleet of B-2 and B-1 bombers able to deliver nukes anywhere on Russia, and those ‘launch-on-warning’ capable Minutemen missiles still in their land based silos, he will ask himself if Iran is worth seeing Mother Russia destroyed over, and that’s when he’ll send the inevitable telegram to Madmood Ahbinjerkinoff that says “sorry, can’t help you this month, try back later. If there IS a ‘later’ that is...”

Remember "Attack Serbia and you attack Russia!" ?

Even Clinton laughed at that.

Russia will not go to war over 1, or one million, dead Iranians.

Remember, when the MSM was predicting WWIII because we mined Haiphong harbor in Vietnam, and killed a few Russian sailors in the process, Gromyko’s response was “You gotta do what you gotta do.”

That’s an empty bluff. Russia has no will to go nuclear in defense of Iran, and conventionally Russia would get quite bloodied in any confrontation with the United States.

Putin is playing a dangerous game.

But then we made mistakes also in our Russian policies since George I was President. George I did everything to shore up the collapsing Soviet Union and it collapsed despite his efforts - thanks to ROnald Reagan and a Polish Pope.

When it did, the U.S. was not there with a “Marshall Plan” clone to help the newly born Russian Republic. COnsequently Mr. Putin was able to seize power. Then we started tweaking his tail with that plan to put missiles on the Russian border and supporting the ISlamic nuts in Bosnia against the Christian Serbs. Not smart.

We should have develpoed a pro-active policy to establish functioning capitalist pro-western governments in Eastern Europe and Russia and allied with them against all Muslims - Bosnians, Caucasian Groups, and the Chinese.

We let Putin put himself where he is now - in a postion to checkmate the U.S. in the Middle East if don’t work to get him on our side against the Iranians someway. Everybody has their price.

Blah, blah.

This is not 1915. Get a friggin’ clue.

Russia would stamp its feet, maybe tighted the oil spiggots for a few days... But they will grin and sell Tehran more reactors and anti-aircraft equipment after we destroy their first consignment.

Putin is kowtowing to Khamenei. He’s choosing to be in favor of a nuclear-armed Iran over the interest of civilized nations.
