Attack Iran and you attack Russia (Sez Putin while in Tehran)
Asia Times ^ | Oct 26, 2007 | Pepe Escobar

Posted on 10/26/2007 6:39:00 AM PDT by dennisw

The barely reported highlight of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Tehran for the Caspian Sea summit last week was a key face-to-face meeting with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

A high-level diplomatic source in Tehran tells Asia Times Online that essentially Putin and the Supreme Leader have agreed on a plan to nullify the George W Bush administration's relentless drive towards launching a preemptive attack, perhaps a tactical nuclear strike, against Iran. An American attack on Iran will be viewed by Moscow as an attack on Russia.

But then, as if this were not enough of a political bombshell, came the abrupt resignation of Ali Larijani as top Iranian nuclear negotiator. Early this week in Rome, Larijani told the IRNA news agency that "Iran's nuclear policies are stable and will not change with the replacement of the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council [SNSC]." Larijani will keep attending SNSC meetings, now as a representative of the Supreme Leader. He even took time to remind the West that in the Islamic Republic all key decisions regarding the civilian nuclear program are made by the Supreme Leader. Larijani actually went to Rome to meet with the European Union's Javier Solana alongside Iran's new negotiator, Saeed Jalili, a former member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), just like President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.

In itself, the Putin-Khamenei meeting was extraordinary, because the Supreme Leader rarely receives foreign statesmen for closed talks, even one as crucial as Putin. The Russian president, according to the diplomatic source, told the Supreme Leader he may hold the ultimate solution regarding the endlessly controversial Iranian nuclear dossier. According to IRNA, the Supreme Leader, after stressing that the Iranian civilian nuclear program will continue unabated, said. "We will ponder your words and proposal."

I ran across this article and have not seen it anywhere. It is 10 pages long and quite a read. I am not knowledgeable in this area at all nor do I know how Esquire leans or how they might chop up their articles. The people the story is about were employed in the Bush Administration. It causes me to question what is really going on.

Putin’s an idiot who embraces the age-old Russian dream of a warm-water port on the Gulf; he believes he can control the Moslems but little realizes that future generations of his countrymen will be speaking Farsi and bowing to Mecca.

A high-level diplomatic source in Tehran...An American attack on Iran will be viewed by Moscow as an attack on Russia.

Is that anything like an "un-named high level source"? When I see the video of Putin spelling out exactly what he will do, then I will take it seriously.

Putin’s not that big and idiot...he could have said this tongue and cheek...but he isnt going to go to War to protect the Iranians...

We might bomb the Iranians from the 7th century AD they live in to 450 B.C, but Putin will still get his oil...and he knows that...

When Pooty Poot is looking at the prospect of a bunch of empty silos on the U.S. Trident submarine fleet (contrasted with his subs who have a nasty tendency to blow up underwater, ala ‘Kursk’), plus a fleet of B-2 and B-1 bombers able to deliver nukes anywhere on Russia, and those ‘launch-on-warning’ capable Minutemen missiles still in their land based silos, he will ask himself if Iran is worth seeing Mother Russia destroyed over, and that’s when he’ll send the inevitable telegram to Madmood Ahbinjerkinoff that says “sorry, can’t help you this month, try back later. If there IS a ‘later’ that is...”

Russia will not go to war over 1, or one million, dead Iranians.

Remember, when the MSM was predicting WWIII because we mined Haiphong harbor in Vietnam, and killed a few Russian sailors in the process, Gromyko’s response was “You gotta do what you gotta do.”

That’s an empty bluff. Russia has no will to go nuclear in defense of Iran, and conventionally Russia would get quite bloodied in any confrontation with the United States.

Putin is playing a dangerous game.

But then we made mistakes also in our Russian policies since George I was President. George I did everything to shore up the collapsing Soviet Union and it collapsed despite his efforts - thanks to ROnald Reagan and a Polish Pope.

When it did, the U.S. was not there with a “Marshall Plan” clone to help the newly born Russian Republic. COnsequently Mr. Putin was able to seize power. Then we started tweaking his tail with that plan to put missiles on the Russian border and supporting the ISlamic nuts in Bosnia against the Christian Serbs. Not smart.

We should have develpoed a pro-active policy to establish functioning capitalist pro-western governments in Eastern Europe and Russia and allied with them against all Muslims - Bosnians, Caucasian Groups, and the Chinese.

We let Putin put himself where he is now - in a postion to checkmate the U.S. in the Middle East if don’t work to get him on our side against the Iranians someway. Everybody has their price.

Blah, blah.

This is not 1915. Get a friggin’ clue.

Russia would stamp its feet, maybe tighted the oil spiggots for a few days... But they will grin and sell Tehran more reactors and anti-aircraft equipment after we destroy their first consignment.

I can agree that George 1 made mistakes in not supporting a Free and Prosperous Russia after the USSR collapse, but GB 1 did push Saddam out of Kuwait but then failed reelection...which should not have happened. Clinton failed to support the Free agenda anywhere...and managed to bomb the Christian Serbs and screw up with NOK, China, Russia, Alqueda, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Israel and more.

Only got to the second paragraph and saw this line.
That's not a serious approach to diplomacy, Mann says. Diplomacy is about talking to your enemies.
then this line.
He repeated his firm belief that the White House had to draw up a road map with real solutions to the division of Jerusalem and the problem of refugees, something with final borders. That was the only remedy to the crisis in the Middle East.
Then this line.
But the important thing is that the Iranians agreed to talk unconditionally, Mann says. "They specifically told me time and again that they were doing this because they understood the impact of this attack on the U.S., and they thought that if they helped us unconditionally, that would be the way to change the dynamic for the first time in twenty-five years."

She believed them.
Never believe the words of your enemies, only their actions....

Then this little tidbit sums it up--
Abdullah sat down and told Bush he was going to ask a direct question and wanted a direct answer. Are you going to do anything about the Palestinian issue?

Then the king of Jordan came to Washington to see Bush. There had to be a road map for peace in Palestine, the king said.
(translation)If you don't help us Arabs push the Jews into the sea, we will make life harder for you...

I cant get myself to read past the halfway mark on this story. A CIA analyst and a state department flunkie (we voted for Bush, uh huh. Just cus they said it we should believe them) are upset with how our elected Republican officials decide to handle matters, imagine that. Maybe these two should accept the fact that the iranians were lying to them all the while building nukes.

Yea, Russia will risk missiles raining down on their cities just to protect Iran.

For those who believe this, there is a bridge in Irans desert that is for sale. The bidding will start at $100,000.000.00.

“Clinton failed to support the Free agenda anywhere...and managed to bomb the Christian Serbs..”

And Bush II is carrying through with Clinton’s anti-Serbian policies.

Nobody can suppport Clinton’s policies - but then its difficult to make policy when you’re fooling around with anything in skirts.

You know, I fully understand what you are saying but I no longer have the confidence that you seem to have. I don’t trust Bush and his coherts any more than I trust the enemy. And yes, I voted for him twice and have been a life long Republican. I see no difference between either party any longer.

From 91 through 96 at least the U.S. government spent billions in the former Soviet Republics to support privitization, the creation of tv and radio stations, newspapers, accounting and legal structures, etc. I’m not looking for an argument but rather an understanding of what you think the U.S. SHOULD have done?
