NOT SATISFIED with its full-scale attack on Iraq, the Bush administration is now launching an inexplicable, unwarranted and unworkable attack on California's economy and its social fabric.
It is doing so by declaring war against employers who hire illegal immigrants - and against these immigrants themselves.
No state will be hurt more than California, which is home to at least one-quarter of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States. California's $32 billion agricultural industry is dependent on them. They also make up a significant percentage of the construction, restaurant, hotel and other sectors of the California workforce.
Within weeks, the Dept. of Homeland Security, in concert with the Social Security Administration, is planning to send out waves of "no match" letters to employers. If an employee's Social Security information does not match those on file with the federal government, the employer will be required to fire the worker within 90 days, if the discrepancy can't be resolved. If the worker isn't fired, the employer will be subject to a $2,200 fine per worker, and stiffer penalties later on.
For years, President Bush has made the argument that immigration "enforcement" must be accompanied by "comprehensive reform" of the entire system, including some form of legalization of undocumented immigrants.
Now that "comprehensive reform" of immigration laws crashed and burned in Congress this spring, however, Bush has embraced an "enforcement only" strategy.
Ideally, there would be no illegal immigrants in the United States. The way to enter the country, and to stay here, should be with a legal visa.

To the author of this piece: IT'S CALLED ENFORCING THE LAW, YOU F$%KING DOPE!
If only that were true.
It tells a great deal about the pot smoking sexual deviants in San Francisco that the city's major newspaper misses such an obvious point.
These people are UN-BE-LIEVABLE. The malignant narcissism it takes to flush the whole nations culture down the sh!tter so they can have their lawns mowed for cheap because they’re too g%^damn lazy to do it themselves is mind-boggling.
“They also make up a significant percentage of the construction, restaurant, hotel and other sectors of the California workforce.”
...and bump legal, lawful, born here, Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, others from those jobs. It’s BS that they are overall taking jobs that Americans won’t do. Pure BS.
There is most certainly a war on California’s social fabric and economy - but the culprits are the invaders NOT Americans who are trying to enforce the law.
Whatever moron wrote this editorial must not have gotten the memo that the DHS’s masterful plan has the flaw that IT’S ILLEGAL! The Social Security Administration is forbidden from sharing its “no match” data with anyone, so DHS will never know which employers are getting these letters. The entire scheme has been acknowledged as impossible to implement, unless Congress changes the law. Fat chance of that with the Democrats in control.
But at least they work.
But . .but . .but . .we thought the minimum wage was the cure-all? Why do we need illegals when all workers deserve this minimum? There are many unemployeds, hire them at minimum wage and presto, problem solved. Right?
Liberals ALWAYS take the side of the law-breakers, when it comes to los freebies.....
I wish the Bush administration WOULD declare war on the journalist and editorial page editors in all 50 states.
Journalists are like religious zealots who believe the ends justifies the means. They are nothing but a haughty group of snake oil salesmen who occupy the lower teer depravity. No need in arguing with them, for logic and reason is but a cool drink of boiling acid they dare not touch. Up is down, left is right, wrong is...well...spiritual in their own degenerate way. Journalists are the new snake oil salesmen of the 21st century. History will mock them well.
Yep... Except the ones who steal, rape, murder, smuggle drugs, sell drugs, etc. etc....
Sure thing, they work. Of course Americans would work too if they could earn enough to live on. It's just American worker's unreasonable expectations that make illegal immigrants so attractive to employers. Things like a wage greater than what they can get on welfare, workplace health and safety considerations, you know, all that unreasonable stuff.
A good observation, if only it stood alone. (Except, that is, for the "ideally" part, which seems gratuitous.) Unfortunately, one can easily anticipate the "but" that is to follow. (Someone once wrote that "but" is a word that means, "Ignore everything I have said up to this point; here comes the real scoop.")
The administration's enforcement "surge" is also likely to take a toll on families and communities. Statistics show that many illegal immigrants are part of families made up of legal immigrants and U.S. citizens. Many families will be broken apart by the policies the administration plans to imminently enforce.
Meaning, presumably, that the US ought not enforce its own laws. That would be, well...unconscionable. Right?
SFC editor must not have gotten the memo.
Bush Administration has already admitted that the Feds have NO WAY to ENFORCE their threats against the employers.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
I’m tired of California conducting a war against the rest of the Country. Hey, folks - SHUT UP and follow the law!
Is that the pic that they attached to the editorial?
What a crock!
Only 2% of illegals work in agriculture!
The propaganda machines are alive and well!
But of course, they always expect others to pay for those freebies.
