he can't really polish this turd...
He knows dang well what the remaining 2 years of his administration will be.
My guesses on "investigation of the month"
1. WMD INtelligence "failure"
2. Iraq War "failure"
3. "loss" of OBL
4. Katrina "Failure"
5. Energy Policy of Evil Dick Cheney
and a couple more..."Corruption" investigations
now figure 2-4 months each and we're ready for Presidential primaries!
This Administration is pretty much over, but Bush will keep swinging with what he has left.
On the "Compromise" side we will also see amnesty for illegals, increased minimum wage, expanded benefits for seniors, increased entitlements
Yes, Bush just said he lied to a reporter, so as to not effect the election.
I'm not sure that it would have helped republicans at all in the election for Bush to announce this last week, as I think we can see conservatives would have been disallusioned, and I don't think too many people would have voted republicans just because Rumsfeld was going.
I do like that this is being seen as an election on Iraq, whch it was. That should make it hard for the democrats to pass much of their agenda, since they never got votes based on Iraq.
Bush is also right that the other big factor was scandal, and while some was manufactured and democrat scandal was ignored so far, the republicans did have problems with scandal, Abramoff was not a good thing, and that also doesn't help democrats pass their agenda.
If it wasn't for Judges and Immigration, I wouldn't be upset (that and losing my own Senator really sucks, I'd love to be able to say that at least Virginia did it's part, but we didn't, and my OWN COUNTY didn't go for Allen, which sickens me).
Bush will still send good Judges, they just won't get voted on, but he was for immigration reform that will now pass.
OK, so now Bush is saying he did not LIE about Rumsfeld, because he hadn't made the decision before he talked to Gates, and Bush wasn't going to make the final decision until after the election because he didn't want it to be political.
So that's good. At least he didn't lie to the reporters.
When I saw W standing on the rubble at Ground Zero with a bullhorn, I thought, "We got ourselves a president!" Now its 180 degree turn.
No, Bush knew that firing Rumsfeld before the election would anger the base, so he held off. However, I don't think the final decision was made until last night, when they saw the magnitude of the losses. They are just doing damage control, bring in some one new, gain some time, take away a mayor talking point away from the opposition.
Pretty good question by Suzanne.
Even Rush didn't know how to respond and just went to break.
Rush just cut the presser on WABC - Rush sounds completely drained. he knows, as we do, that this presser is a total disaster.
Reporters are kind of dumb.
The VP is elected, not appointed.
A resignation would be at Cheney's option, not GW's.
I figure if I talk to myself I will always have an intelligent audience.
Now a big part of my brain thinks that this Commander-in-Chief HAS to know what he's doing.
Did he threaten the congress pubbies with throwing Rumsfeld under the bus if they lose? Better, did he PROMISE the congress pubbies with throwing Rumsfeld under the bus if they lose?
I'm trying to be calm but it's going to take a lot to convince me that this so obvious capitulation to the loonies is a good thing and further, WHY NOW?
I'm not done yet. Kinda like talking to myself.
>>>Or at the very least, unleash our armed forces and let them do their job.<<<
Post of the day so far! With that, I gotta get off FR for awhile and regroup. This has been too much... I don't know what to think anymore.
My eldest son goes to boot camp within the week. I'm not a happy camper.
I can't imagine what Bush is thinking and going through today...
His job is tough and it hurts to see so many negative comments about him and what he's saying. Seems like a lot of fare-weather fans (for lack of a better description).
Damn scary. My nephew just went over to Iraq in September and now all this is going down. Time to pray harder than ever for all our own serving right now.
The democrats have now been give a responsibility. They cannot continue to just sit and criticize. The next Presidential election will be very soon. They cannot put themselves in a position where they are blamed for terror attacks, losing the war, etc.
I just do not know what to say..
I give Bush this.He is honest to a fault. His emotions and glue are in an honest reaction mode. Ain't a single handfull of politicians that honest
I agree - I'm not hearing a defeatist.
so why didn't he do this in August?
This needs to stop..NOW.
Bush trying to clarify that the cumulitive affect of the election is a thumping to the NYT reporter...
Yes, Suzanne just asked a very hurtful question. I wish I could see all the skeletons in their closets but they cover each other's backs.
Rumsfeld has been trying to resign for at least a couple years. Maybe Rumsfeld wanted out.
Not really. Its the people who have always supported him who can't understand anything he's saying in this presser.
Bush has only lost once in his career. I don't think he has the slightest clue how to deal with it.
I can tell him this much. This isn't how you handle loss.
He should have looked to Leiberman for an example. You strike back and put your opponent on the defensive before they've even adjusted to winning one battle.
What he should have been doing effective immediately was announcing the terrorists in Iraq and their sympathtizers are not going to face a restrained military anymore and started pounding them down into the ground. Then he should have taken the new tone gloves off and started telling people the truth about the Dems, the Islamofascists and articulate the conservative message that helped Dems win last night.
Instead we get Rummy sacrificed to the wolves and further appeals to new tone.
get him out now. get him out of the military if you can. the american people who elected this Dem majority, are not worthy of his valor and sacrifice.
Maybe we'll be less PC in how we fight now? That would be good.
Okay Charles, I'll talk to you. Cause I sense sarcasm here.
Remember that I did state that he handled admitting he lied quite awkwardly. It seemed prolonged, almost daring us to fill in the silent space.
Everyone KNOWS they LIE to Reporters. But...
Ah well. I agree on your cautious appraisal of matters right now.
I still feel something mighty wrong with this whole thing but I gotta go find my wits.
President Bush is a politician. He knows politics is business. He doesn't take things personally. He is a BIG man.
I'm in shock everybody... what the hell is going on today?
No. Many of the seatslost were to corruption issues. Going all the way back to Duke Cunningahm, Ney,Foley, and so on....at least 7.
I wouldn't be either. Now he's talking about the carnage on TV? Where the hell is the positive stuff he's been spouting for the past two years? This is incredible.
"Maybe we'll be less PC in how we fight now? That would be good."
I just don't see how that washes out of all this.
At least the MSM is carrying something Bush has to say on all channels for a change.
He just made a salient point: It was a close election, but the cumulative effect was a 'thumping."
Putting the thumping aside for a moment, one thing we need to always remember is that the country is still narrowly divided.
Apparently, the majority of voters didn't believe him.
yeah, you christian homophobes are unpatriotic - let's see what measures we have to control you...
Bush is human too and I'm sure he's doing the best he can with what he's being given.
I'm sorry but I disagree with you vehemently. He is working under extrordinary conditions. I think he is very hurt and is trying to cover it up. Our President cries easily.
That's what I think.
Just watch. Remember DJIA 12,000 and 4.4% unemployment. Anyway, they didn't put themselves in this position, the voting public did.
Did Bush just say up on the podium: "What do you think, I'm nuts?"
Yeah. Something caused this. I wonder what he and Pelosi really talked about.
Yes he did.
What's going on is that the President is in shock, he's only lost once in his life and he's digging this hole by capitulating to his enemies rather then finally taking off the gloves and dumping the new tone.
