Red Wine May Help Prevent Alzheimer's

Drinking Cabernet Sauvignon may help prevent Alzheimer's disease, according to new animal research.

Reporting in the November issue of the FASEB Journal, researchers observed the effects of feeding the red wine to mice with Alzheimer's disease-type brain changes.

Compared to mice that received ethanol or water, the mice that were given Cabernet Sauvignon experienced significantly reduced Alzheimer's disease-type brain deterioration of memory function.

The researchers, from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, found Cabernet Sauvignon's benefits were due to its ability to prevent the generation of proteins that cause plaque build-up in the brain, which is the main characteristic of Alzheimer's disease.

Just had a couple of glasses of a fine Oregon Pinot Noir; but can't remember where I left my cell phone ... guess I'll be calling myself again from my land line. Or, maybe if I have a little more Pinot Noir, I'll remember.

Is that the 64-ounce short glass, or the full 96 ?

The antioxidants in red wine will help prevent alzheimers. I am not a wine drinker but I'm willing to entertain drinking very high quality wine. I take ginkgo pills, lots of grape seed extract, etc. and I exercise and make sure my brain stays fresh with reading, puzzles, etc. I work with Alzheimer challenged people and it just motivates me to take care of myself now.

What about Cab Franc or the Rhones?

Based on my level of wine consumption, my liver will give out long before my brain loses touch.

My dad polished off 3 martinis before dinner and a bottle of red wine with dinner most of the years I was growing up. It didn't prevent Alzheimer's from nailing him. Diabetes didn't help either.

Also, I'll want it to be sulfite free. Sulfites give me headaches but wine with some nice food doesn't :-)
